Indu Sarkar by Madhur Bhandarkar, again he has chosen a very controversial topic overtime for his film "Emergency". Due to political impeccability the title does not invoke the political leaders who had declared Emergency across the country in 1975, disregarding being in the same time interval.
Plot -
The main focus in the movie is Emergency eventually in which Indu Sarkar(Kirti Kulhari) a housewife of Bureaucrat Naveen Sarkar(Tota Roy Chowdhary) gets in the mess as she realizes that the government is doing injustice with the people living in slums.
As after the declaration of Emergency, the ruling party is executing a 5 point mission which have the following objectives literacy, population control, beautification by removal of slums, termination of castism and dowry system. According to this program, the population control has been done by forced sterilization and the beautification by forcefully removing people from slums even if it costs their life.
One day when Indu was going somewhere in Rickshaw, police was ordered to remove the slum area of the Turkman Gate area for the beautification purposes forcefully, and it ends up dirty in the sense that police started firing on innocent people and during all of this she finds a pair of siblings get separated from their parents. She took them to her home until she returns them to their parents after finding them.
As she started finding them she came to know the abhore face of the Emergency, and Indu who wanted to be an ideal housewife, gets motivated to help these people who were being harrased by government. So, as the story progresses she became a member of a rebellion group called Himmat India Group which was working under the lead of Nanaji(Anupam Kher) and became a rebellion.
This group’s task is to make the government to remove Emergency without any voilence.
And the question arises
What happen to Indu’s married life?
What happen to those siblings?
What happen to Indu’s husband?
Will this group be able to make the govt. to remove Emergency?
If Yes. What will be Indu’s contribution in it?
And If not. Then what happen to Indu?
All these questions will be answered in the movie.
Performance -
Kirti Kulhari’s performance as Indu Sarkar was not upto the level as the script demands. She could not have got a better chance to show her talent. Tota Roy Chowdhary was justying with his role in both the situations where he was a caring and concerned husband, and also where he was an angry one. Neil Nitin Mukesh as Chief has nailed his character of the politician. Sheeba Chaddha has utilized her limited screen time well and made most out of it. Direction by Madhur Bhandarkar was awesome as he was a master of movies based on reality which he has proven already with some of his previous movies like Page 3 and Fashion.
Music & Cinematography -
Cinematography by Keiko Nakahara was good enough as he has maintained the feel of history. Music by Anu Malik was not good but not bad either, it as above avg.
Overall the movie is a one time watch, not a movie to be watched in cinema hall. As the story of the movie is lengthy and it drags too much as the pace of the movie is very slow because of its genre.
