The book Inkheart by Cornelia Funke is one of the best books I have ever read! Its full of adventure, betrayal, and an uncontrollable magic that sends one family on an unbelievable journey. The journey is long and very dangerous. It unearths secrets and tests trust. Want to know the darkest secret? It is all caused by one book. Have you ever read a really good book and you feel like you are there? The characters are alive and standing right next to you? That is exactly what this book is like, literally. You will have to read the book to find out. Take my advice do NOT read it out loud. You have no idea what will come out or go in. Cornelia Funke is an amazing author, one of my favorites.
You can tell she put a lot of work into this book. At the beginning of each chapter there is a quote or short passage from other stories or poems that have something to do with the upcoming chapter. The quotes come from classic novels like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Peter Pan, The Princess Bride, Kidnapped, and Treasure Island. But there are also some newer favorites like The Secret of Platform 13 and all of the Lord of The Rings. There are even quotes from picture books like Where the Wild Things Are. This was one of my favorite parts of the book. Sometimes I would turn ahead in the chapter just to read the next one! I advise against it though, sometimes it ruins a surprise or just creates more suspense. Funke also took great care in modeling he characters. My favorite character was Maggie, an average 12-year-old girl who shows more bravery and courage then I ever could. She keeps hope alive even when all seems lost. She is the main character in this typical good verse evil, winner take all story.
