Well I was disappointed at myself to have missed this movie when it was showing at theatres and finally got to watch it on TV. I always knew it will be good .Why?
Well its coming from Nagesh Kukunoor who has made films like Hyderabad blues, Rockford and Teen Diwaren. The last one being truly superb.
Now coming back to Iqbal, Its about a deaf and mute boy who is very passionate about cricket and dreams to become a fast bowler and play for India someday. He lives in a small village in a family of four. His mother and Sister(this girl deserves a lot of accolades for her role) are very co-operative and always inspire him to chase his dreams. His father is a hardworking farmer who labours a lot to feed his family and hence is totally disapproving of his only son trying to be a cricketer rather than helping him on the fields.
Then Iqbal comes across a fellow villager who was an ex-cricketer but now has become alcoholic and spends most of his time drinking and lazing around wherever he can.First he convinces this old fella to coach him and then goes on to get selected in the state team and finally fulfills his dream of donning the national colours. But he faces major obstacles everywhere in this long journey of his and deals with them bravely by virtue of support from his family and advice from his coach who becomes single handedly responsible for Iqbals success.Nice storyline.
Shreyas Talpade playing Iqbal and Nasseruddin Shaha playing the alcoholic coach deserve a standing applause for their performances. And finally one more gem of a movie from Nagesh Kukunoor.A must-watch for sure.
