Jassi jaisi koi nahin! yup they got that right!!

Makeover da jawaab nahin!

Watching the promos of this somewhat retarded serial sounded like suicide to me. But I braved enough to watch glimpses of an entire episode. There were a couple of things that just hit me bam in the face....why does that girl wear those frames? I mean, yeah she is a middle-class girl, so alright contact lenses are out, but a decent frame, couldnt she afford that? Her frames are big enough to accommodate a family picture! And what’s with those in-your-face braces??? Her teeth actually looked pretty aligned to me. Yeah, take off the glasses and braces, wham there’s a makeover, Ta----da!!!! Apart from that, that girl has flawless skin, a slim bod and generally everything that takes to be a heroine on a soap. And if she can afford to go to a hair salon to get that poof hairdo, she might as well get a better coiffure! Also, how convenient is that these people always work in a glamorous magazine or fashion house. Work in a bank or a government school, dammit! Then we wont watch, yeah I get the point. I rest my case.

The big reveal----yey!

The one thing that bugged me most was Sony was publicising this event that it was sponsoring, and the promo said that Jassi would be ’’revealed’’ on the day of the event, so viewers would know what the actress really looked like, LOL indeed! I read somewhere that great precautions were being taken to ensure that the real person was not revealed until the moment. I mean, what kinda crazy idea is that. The actress that plays her is totally different from Jassi, why should they conceal her image. The explanation was that the makeover and big reveal day in the serial was fast approaching and the producers didnt want people to get a sneak peek, like someone was interested! Gimme a break!

About the story, from what I gathered, it was the same old, simple middle-class girl with values fights rich snobbish girl with no values. In the process, she also falls for some guy who turns out to be a slimeball, with no values. Notice the emphasis is always on values!! But makeovers can work miracles. Apparently, even remote controls can. Wait, what am I saying? Remote controls are a miracle of technology themselves. I must have been on lithium for not having realized this sooner and for not having switched on something else, perhaps there’s an Ekta Kapoor serial somewhere on Star, hmmmm.

Dekho magar dhyaan se!

Oh and before I forget, I have to rant about another serial, a clone of JJKN, please dont die laughing. Yeah, it was called..Dekho magar pyaar se and it had this really ugly girl wearing a fat suit, glasses and two humongous braids!!!!! I think she had braces too, but c’mon people this is pretty good considering I only saw the promos for this crapfest! She falls in love with a guy and he is unattainable, so our heroine decides to have a makover. Sheesh, what’s with this makeover mania? It was apparently inspired from some Latino soap. The one unmistakable similarity though, both girls that is Jassi and this other girl, I dont know her name, look demented!

My pettest peeve now about JJKN and/or all its clones, why do educated, middle-class girls have to be sooooo boring and a stick-in-the-mud kinda characters? Cant they have fun while standing up for their beliefs and values? The girl in Saaya (the series ran from 2001-2003 I think, on Sony) or the girl in Alpviram (Pallavi Joshi) were realistic, but Jassi just comes off a one-dimensional cardboard character, who is stuck in a time warp!

Final thought:

Jassi and its clones are not in the same league as the saas-bahu saga that Kekta Kapoor flushes down our throat, but it’s not good television either. And these stories too keep on dragging endlessly, without a resolution in sight. How long? Just how much longer do we have to suffer the wafer-thin story stretched out for years, before someone ends this madness and our misery????
