Jatin-Lalit: Brother of Brothers

I still remember watching Amir Khan jumping in slow motion

in the song “Pehla Nasha” from the movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.  Most youngsters still hum that song even

today. The magical composers of that song were Jatin Lalit.    `

They began their career in 1992, composing

music for the Hindi movie Yaara Dildara.

Everyone was in love with their music for longer than a decade.  The two brothers have composed the music for many  Bollywood Blockbusters including *Jo

Jeeta Wohi Sikander, *Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, *Kuch Kuch Hota

Hai, *Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, * Chalte Chalte* and Hum Tum.

After such a successful career together the brothers decided

to go their separate ways.

Their last movie together was Fanaa.  Their last music was appreciated across the

world making it one of the year’s greatest hits.

Despite giving such memorable scores, their private lives

were not in sync.  Since they were both taking credit for one album, the money was divided between them.  Since the big brother, Jatin, was the head of

the pair, he always look 55-60% of the share.

The little brother, Lalit, had no

problem with this until recently.

The differences in their relationship came after they got

married. Their wives weren’t happy with the settlement between the

brothers.  Since they both lived

together, little conflicts arose periodically at home while the brothers kept

composing music.  These conflicts were

having a little influence on their music also.

If one looks at their music, they started lifted styles and compositions

from various western and middle-eastern compositions during these times.  Also, the directors and producers they were

working with started hiring more than one composers in their films due to the

lack of versatility in the duo’s music.

Finally, both of the brothers couldn’t tolerate the tension

at home and the quality of the music they were producing.  They both started blaming each other for

their career’s down fall.  Hence, the boundary between their homes was constructed.

The brothers that were once unbreakable were now separated.

The two brother went to their separate ways after Fanaa because they didn’t

want to continue the tension at home regarding the money.  Lalit has managed to get a lot of contracts,

including the unsuccessful music for *Life

Mein Kabhie Kabhiee*.  However, Jatin

hasn’t been so successful in finding any work.

The duo was better off working together and coming up with a compromise

rather than split.  Now their music

quality is really poor and they are not in any demand.
