Different..But wont be a chart buster.

ARR is back to Tamil Music after GodFather, and if you had listened to that one, you can relate very well with SOK.SOK’s music is different and ARR has experimented quite a bit, but sadly that may well be the reason why this album wont stay in the minds of an average Tamil music lover.

Each song is different and is rendered for a specific mood, but if you wanna know if ARR has given a chartbuster with SOK, the answer is a big NO...

Song 1:Munbe Vaa

Artists:Shreya Ghosal, Naresh Iyer

Easily the pick of the album. Its just the kind of song that you expect from a Rahman album. The opening music of this number had me spell bound.I guess the instrument used is Santoor, but hey who cares, its simply mesmerising.A beautiful melody that’s right up there with Mayilirage, Snehidane and the other ARR classics. Both Naresh Iyer and Shreya Ghosal do a great job.

This is sure to be the most popular song from this album, a melody lover’s delight.

Song 2:New York Nagaram

Artist:A.R. Rahman

My second favourite in SOK..ARR does a melodious western with this number..A refreshing and different song by Tamil film song standards. Its just the kind of song that you want to hear in the background while you are working on your pc (Atleast for me..).A bit like Lucky Ali’s brand of music.

A very soothing, relaxing song, but That said, this wont appeal to the mass audience, so I dont expect this to be appreciated widely

Song 3:Machakari

Artists:Shankar Mahadevan, Vasundra Dass

A High Voltage song with two High Voltage vocalists.Music is once again quite different, very western.I liked this song and I think I will like it more as I hear it more (synonymous with Rahman’s music)..I think this song would be a decent hit, provided its picturised well.

Song 4:Kummi Adi

Artists:Seerkali Sivachithambaram, Naresh Iyer, Swarnalatha

Folk Music Time Folks! Another brand of music that ARR is quite good at.But this song does not quite match the expectations. The singers and choice of instruments are perfect for folk, but the tune is not one that would linger for too long.

A decent song, but one that I wont listen to, more than a couple of times.

Song 5:Maaricham Yatho

Artists: Krishna, Carolisa, Aslam

Supposed to be a dance number. Its got the trance, the booming female voice, but if you are expecting a Yakkai Thiri or a Thee pidikka, you’ll be disappointed. Not a song that I’ll bother listening to more than once.

Song 6:Jillendru Oru Kadhal

Artist:Tanvi

A happy, peppy song that serves as the theme for this movie.(obviously the lyricist didnt predict the title change). It reminded me of ’’Hello Mr.EthirKatchi’’from Iruvar.A good, different number, that should blend well with the movie.

Song 7:Majaa Majaa

Artists:S.P.B. Charan, Shreya Ghosal

A sensual Song, guess Rahman had it for the next S.J.Surya movie but decided to drop this one into SOK to make up the numbers.A type of song that you have heard a lot of times before, may click with the mass audience, and I emphasise the word may..

So, Overall, What does the reviewer think of this Album???.I think its worth a buy and I am sure people who appreciate different, refreshing music in Tamilcinema would also feel the same..

But frankly I expected ARR to come up with the kind of music that he is so popular for, Roja, Kaathalan, Bombay, Duet, Alaipayuthe, Boys Uyire and the likes which was a big hit with the purists and the front benchers. But SOK will be another Kangalal Kaidhu Sai that a few may take to, but would fall flat with most.
