Nestled into a narrow by-lane off Hill Road, Bandra, Jim’mes Kitchen is situated at a ‘blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’ corner, when you turn into the lane opposite Balaji Restaurant on Hill Road, Bandra. Be careful about your car though, as parking in the narrow gully is allowed only after 9 pm. A small place (only 9-10 tables), it doesn’t get bogged down by its tiny interiors. Enter its confines and you have entered the gates of a gastronomic paradise. Vertically built on two levels, it at once oozes comfort and a secure cozy feeling, ideal for a late evening romantic dinner tucked into a cozy corner. The menu boasts of a wide variety of fares in the non-veg section; the veggie menu though is limited. Amongst the soups, you get the “Best Manchow Chicken Soup in Mumbai” flavored delicately with just the right amounts of spices to concoct a magical pot of thick steamy appetizer. From the starters, try the ‘J.K. Spicy Chicken/Fish’ (Rs.90/-) both of which are equally good. Crispy Spinach Spicy Chicken (95/-) is worth dying for. Steer away though from Mongolian Fried chicken which is disappointingly ordinary- just boneless chicken fried in a red batter. The best starter trophy though would be won hands-down by ‘Roast Pork Chilly Dry’ (95/-) which consists of slivers of juicy, steamy pork portions delicately cooked in garlic, onion and green chillies to give it a world-class flavor. Believe me, my friend and I have had the same dish for over 50 odd consecutive visits to the place in the last 5 years! Others may try the Chicken variant of the same recipe. Those with a sweet tooth may try ‘Sesame Chicken in Honey Chilly Dry’ as a different genre of starters. Amongst the main course, their Chicken/Veg Chinese Chopsuey is simply superb for those with a taste for bland gravies. ‘Lemon Chicken/Fish’ is a twisted version of a conventional main course and one has to try it once for the sheer novelty of the steamy concoction. The chicken in oyster sauce, Hunan chicken and Chicken with bamboo shoots are other examples of the sheer variety of their culinary amalgam. A word of caution though- give its ‘Schezwan’ varieties a miss as they have quite a different brew of schezwan spices. A hardcore non-veg friend swears by their Steamed rice, a dish that I have not yet tried. But even if u are confused by its elaborate menu, u can just sink your teeth into the Chicken/Veg fried rice which is as good as a plain fried rice can get. The only drinks available are the run-of-the mill aerated waters, and they don’t serve desserts out here! Yet for the sheer joy of sinful Chinese food at rates that don’t burn holes in your pocket, Jimme’s Kitchen is simply unbeatable…!!!
