An underrated historical romance

I am perhaps a little biased in my review of this film because I have always wanted someone to take an interest in the most under publicized romance in Indian history, that of Jodha Akbar. The only romances that make legends are those when both lovers die as a result of their love for each other eg. Laila Majnu, Romeo Juliet, Heer Ranjha etc etc

Here is a refreshing change from it all, the idea of a romance that starts after marriage and results in a stronger king and emperor. To imagine a marriage between a hindu and a muslim in those times and that too from royal families was always very difficult for me. And to top this the marriage was that of political convenience.

Ashutosh Govarikar is one of my favorite directors and he did not disappoint me this time either. The sets, costumes, script and language of the movie are superb. The actors have all done a great job, my favorite being Hritik who looks like young Akbar in all respects. The plot seems a little contrived and superficial sometimes as I think that the director was trying to stay away from all controversies with historians on grounds of mixing fact with fiction. On the whole it is a very pleasant trip down history and revives the sense of India’s grandeur during the Moghul period
