Jodhaa Akbar is a period film set in 16th century. Apart from being a emotional love story. The movie has various elements of action and inspiration. Now, Before I begin writing the basic review.
*Some clarifications:
*You may watch this movie. for.
# Being a Hrithik / Ash / Gowarikar fan.
# Have skipped all the perid films till date.
# A good entertaining family drama.
# Grand / Melodious music / Good performances.
*You may not. for.
*# The movie is strictly not for people who have expected great war sequences/blood gore and breathtaking action. The movie has about 20-25 minutes of action.
# The movie may not be suitable for those, Who do not like serious or silent cinema.
# Not a good deal for bunking. 210 Minutes including credits.
# If you have liked Mughl - E - Azam and you are going to compare the two different genres.
# Or, you belong to those people who have created absolutely useless and senseless controversies by going against its release.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THE MOVIE WHICH CAN BE CONSIDERED TO BE A LITTLE CONTROVERSIAL
- May be Jodaa Bai did not wear all that branded Tanishq stuff.
*Plot:
PS: Skip this section, If at all you are going to watch the movie.
Set in 16th Century. For Akbar, Success was not a wish it was a habit. After having conquered the Hindu Kush, he furthered his rule by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godhavari River. The daughter of King Bharmal, Jodha Bai was married off to Akbar as an alliance formed between her father and Emperor Akbar which was basically done to improve the relations between Akbar and the Rajputs. However Jodha Bai soon realises herself to be a political step and a pawn to the earlier move. She demands that before the marriage, Akbar has to meet her conditions, On which he agrees. Akbar now not only has to rule and win over his people but also win the love of his bride. During the same there are a number of traps and betrayels which are being plotted against Akbar by the people who are jealous of his victory, rule, money and leadership.
*Direction:
After an oscar nominated Lagaan and a highly acclaimed Swades, Ashutosh Gowarikar was highly expected to give an equivalent product, but not less at the minimal level. And yes, He does not disappoint anywhere. Ashutosh gets a 9/10 for creating an international touch and ambience to the film. Execution and screenplay is absolutely first rate. Technically, this may be one of most grand and intelligent bollywood has produced till date. The grandness overflows from its sets, props, the hundreds of men and animals used in the making. The script has been utilised to its best level, and the movie can be easiely understood due to its clarity in the subject matter.
Performances:
Hrithik Roshan here is a show stealer, out of a dozen good performances, he lives upto the viewers expectations in every field. If you havent liked him till date, Watch this movie and change your definition. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks good and gives an equivalent performance too. Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ila Arun are first rate. Sonu Sood looks confident, The kid in Akbars role is competent. Supporting cast is natural and the hundreds of men used in war sequences deserve a special mention.
*Postives:
The movie is a untold story, which is the USP of the film. If you dont know anything about Jodha Bai and Akbars relationship, Watch it. You are going to be inspired like anything. The sets used are excellent, the animals do not look forced or tamed [in required scenes], performances are good, Music is very good. Azeem-O-Shaan Shehenshah and Jashn - E - Baharan are few tracks which stand out. Cinemetography is absolutely stunning, Remember the few Troy, LOTR and 300 angles. Imitation is good. Costumes deserve a special mention, Absolutely real. Dialogues are good, Use of Urdu and Hindi is quite easy and pretty usable.
*Negatives:
Inspite of all those positives, The movie fails in a number of areas. The first being its legnth. 210 Minutes! The songs in the movie are not continuous, they begin - a 2 minute scene - song continues - again a 2 minute scene - song ends. Which streched every song to about a 10 minutes! There are 5 songs, So you can imagine the frustration. The second hour is borring and very unexciting, everything seems to have been paused. Though it is compensated in the third hour and few final minutes.
*Scenes to watch out for:
*# Scene No. 1. The begining of the movie.
# Elephant taming.
# The plot against Akbar, just before the intermission.
# Last few minutes.
Overall^. Jodhaa Akbar is a very good period movie, As its a rare work of art in Indian cinema, Watching it will only profit you! Do watch it!
