Gods have created desires and dreams, but society decides how we should live in this world.
How true! The above line sums up the movie.
Being the first to review anything and especially a hindi movie is always a honour and pipping all the movie buffs here to post a review and that too me of all the lousy cine goers , catching up in the movie race surprises me even more. When I was shoved a pair of tickets by my friend , I was least interested to watch this movie, as I could not identify anyone in star cast and moreover , a budda in a lead role put me off even more. However I was literally dragged to the theatres.
What followed lateron was a pleasant surprise. This movie exceeded well above my low expectations and was truely an enjoyable fare.Hindi movies are really treading new horizons nowadays with many experimental projects like by Rahul bose , Ram Gopal Verma etc and this movie even though may not have everything falling in right places, but still is digestable and way sensible and matured when compared to the normal bollywood masala trash .
Jenny played by Perizad Abcz (I cant spell her surname ) is single and has a whole new different outlook towards life , and is a part time Vj, model, executive etc and live life on her own terms. On the other hand is our hero, Victor baerjee , who is a retired high profile , highly respected judge , who has never lived life out of the realms of his jurisdiction. They bump into each other in Joggers park , during morning workout sessions and become good friends .Jenny brings in a new lease of life, in the boring dull life of a judge who is almost retired from life. What follows is an explosive chemistry between the two and the rest is for you to find out from the movie.
Storyline is pretty unusual from an indian context , but very well handled.Subject of this movie is so tricky that it demanded a very mature and delicate treatment .Other things which worked in its favour , was maybe , when I walked in , i did not know what to expect out of this movie, as it had all new faces and this was exactly what clicked for this movie. No big stars means , no hangover of their stereotype image and new faces esepcially Perizad brought with them a fresh new appeal. This movie virtually revolved around 2 main charecters namely Perizad and Victor Banerjee.Perizad has an amazing sex appeal and virtually carry this movie over her shoulders. When I mean sex appeal , it is , no efforts to titilate the audience through lousy dances & skimpy dresses , but oozing with loads and loads of self confidence, substance and natural acting .
Other things which work for this 2.5 hour movie is, it treads a fine line and never divulges from the main plot.
-Whole gamut of emotions are displayed sensibly and there are no typical filmi emotions. The concept of Jenny, as a ultra-hep lady with a modern outllook and a give-me-no-damn attitude is enacted with aplomb and quiet true to life.
-I was afraid that they may spoil the whole thing at the end by applying the bollywood formula , but surprisingly the director have handled it quite realistically. It is was even more amusing to watch the reactions from the crowd in the theatres, in some of the scenes .
-Eventhough the topic is quite serious, there is a comic undertone running all through the movie and is a very light hearted movie. It seems as though Subash Ghai , who is concept writer for this movie, has woken up from a rude shock and is getting real(Thank God!), after disastrous flops of his previous movies.
-Another major plus point is barring one sick Arabian song, there are no other songs to torture you.All the side actors/ress have chipped in a noteworthy performance.Director, whoever it is, needs to be applauded for his fluid effort .
-Some of the dialogues adds zing to the whole movie and peps up the whole scene. There is liberal usage of F words and Bollywood is growing up!
Now coming to drawbacks, it has a fair amount of it in first half.
-Some of the scenes are very amateurish and plain stupid , like the q&A sessions in college is very annoying.
-The aspect of Victor Banerjee as a celebrity judge is overplayed a bit, sometimes in the most childish fashion. But Victor gives a sterling controlled performance .
-If we can discount a few patchy scenes here and there , slackening pace in the initial part of the movie, it is a well made , thought provoking movie.
-The soundtrack of this movie is soft and good, but the repetiton of it in the background, especially Adnans Sanis song , got onto my nerves many times.I heard that concept as usual is borrowed from some english movie, but as long as it is adapted and well made , it should be a welcome relief.
My final word, Do give this movie a try, I can vouch, you will not be disappointed. This movie when compared to other normal Bollywood fare , fairly deserves a bit more than 3 stars .
