Clouds of prizes were going to rain here at MS and the moment I saw MSians creating the flood of movie reviews, I too wanted to sail away with the breeze that took me in a multiplex and I found myself sitting with 10 other people in the first show of the second day after the movie Johnny English was released in India.
Why? Said my mind smiling in its own sly grace. Why such low presence? My heart could not bear the intended pun on the movie by my mind. My heart always liked the movies and serials of Rowan Atkinson. My heart smiled at the sight of Rowan Atkinson. It was blithesome once the flow of movie started. Though my mind was apprehensive owing to the small presence of Atkinson fans.
Please! Dont Expect Much!
I had high expectations from the movie and why not? Rowan Atkinson had been a brilliant actor through these years. The character of Mr. Bean couldnt have been given apt justice if it were not Rowan Atkinson playing that character.
But since I had high hopes (couldnt resist) I was not satisfied. I thought director Peter Howitt Could have added much more funny sequences.
Story was cliché. The directors vision was limited to just mushrooming situational Comedy. Major part of Rowan Atkinsons acting talent was unused. Directors outlook for the Pop Star Natalie Imbrigulia playing the character of Ms. Campbell (InterPolis Agent) was not innovative at all.
Story Outline *
Johnny English (British Secret Service Agent) was the only choice left for providing security to The Royal Crown Jewels. Johnny and Johnnys assistant Bough (played by Ben Miller) produce situations that lead to frantic chaos in performing their duty. Ms. Campbell joins the two later to disassemble the cruel intentions of Pascal Suavage (John Malkovich) whose sole intentions were directed in the destruction of civil life in United Kingdom and turn U.K. into the gargantuan harbor for prisoners.
Direction *
Direction mainly swaggers on such elements listed below. Based on essential ingredients that the director should input, It turns out to be a cliché with a recipe for pure time-pass.
Moments of laughter: *
Throughout the movie, all I could find on my cheeks was just a smile. There were just two or three real moments of laughter. Laughter specifically construes to the laughter that could roll me on the floor or tear my rib apart by the essence of innate zest and comedy. Just a smile! Nothing more than that!
Suspense *
There are no suspense sequences woven into the script. Even a 10-yr.old kid could predict each and every shot of the movie. Suspense agglomerated with situational comedy serves a great deal in such genre of movies.
Dialogues *
In a comedy movie, dialogues play a very important role. Dialogues are the networks of fibres that make the cloth of movie wearable (watchable). Dialogues were just about ok. Any average director and dialogue writer could really have demonstrated the same skill. Had Premjit & Spookaay been appointed as the dialogue writer, the movie would have some sort of saving grace.
Music * * *
Background music is superb. Music director Edward Schermer has arranged some beautiful music. The one to watch out is the background music during the catch and flee sequence. Superb music arrangement and apt to the situations.
Should you watch it or give it a go?
Watch it when:
# The movie can be watched in very discounted prices.
# Your cable vendor shows it on those dull Sundays.
# If you just won a lottery of $ 200, 000.
# If the lovers corner in the city are packed full.
# If your bike breaks down in front of a multiplex and while you repair it, rain starts descending on you with full vigor.
# If you see your dream girl/boy entering into the Cineplex.
Give it a go:
# If you are wise.
# If you can rent DVDs of Naked Gun 33 1/3 -the Final Insult or Baseketball or Hot Shot- I & II
Warning
In case some of you have watched it and are thinking to write a review on this, think twice because its really difficult to write a review of such a movie where story is cliched and dialogues are forgetful. In case you dont agree by the above, Please see that I was joking.
