Kaal is a movie which has been directed by Soham, who was once the assistant director to RGV.This movie is produced by Karan Johar and Shah rukh Khan. When an assistant director of RGV combines with the likes of Karan Johar, your expectations are naturally high.Does the film satisfy the expectations??Lets see....
Apart from Shah Rukh and Karan Johar being the producers, the film also boasts of a very high profile start cast comprising Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Lara Dutta and Esha Deol..The story is as follows:
John and Esha are researcher husband and photographer wife.John works for the National Geographic, no less. They are sent to Orbit park to find out why there are a recent spate of accidents occuring to every tourist who goes to the national park.Vivek Oberoi, girl friend Lara Dutta and their other 2 friends are on the way to their farm house when their car breaks down. They are offered a lift by a local guide who coerces them to enter the National park.John and Vivek meet inside the park, when unfortunately, their car also breaks down. They all join together and go inside the park. But lo...strange things begin to happen....the driver, the care taker, their friends all start to disappear one by one.How they meet Kaali, Ajay Devgan and how they try to escape from the jungle with his help forms the rest of the story.
The idea is novel and the director needs to be applauded for actually going inside a sanctuary and making the film.Other than that, in my opinion, the film falls flat. Some of the sequences are simply unbelievable. For example, I do not understand on what basis did John suspect of Vivek being the killer?the reasons given by him are too frivolous....And when each of the characters die one by one, the entire group screams for a couple of minutes and then life is back to usual.Johns reaction to the death of Vishal is another case in point. Why does no one try to save him when he has fallen into about knee deep water???No one knows:). And the other friend, Sajid he goes on yakking about Shikar and stuff and dies trying to hunt down a rabbit, among all animals!!!The scene where a hand comes up to his face is one which brought a smile to many a face inside the theatre. The killing of the driver and the care taker leave a lot to be explained.the way Esha deol meets her end is also more funny than scary.....cmon, how can a person be dragged inside a well by a bucket of half full water???and you have the usual dream scary sequence which one can make out from the word go.And finally why does everybody always have to do something that is forbidden, that too even after seeing their friends perish??
Undoubtedly Ajay is the one big plus point of this movie. His introduction, when he tames the tigers is very good he has given a good performance.Vivek has also given a good performance and has really tried hard.John Abraham, shows his muscles, catches snakes and does little else.Vishal, Sajid and the care taker lend able support to the team.Esha and Lara do little except to hang out in skimpy outfits and scream at almost everything.Three tigers also make an appearance in the movie. The scenes involving the tigers are executed well but one thought that they would make more than just the 2-3 appearances, going by way the film is being promoted.
The cinematography is very good and really suits the theme of the film.It does give the film an international class. The back ground music, by Salim Sulaiman is also good and do raise goose bumps once in a while, though the Bhoot hangover is pretty apparent when they try to scare you with sounds almost all the time.Thank fully there are no songs in the movie, and thus no speed breakers. There is a song in the beginning of the film during credits, performed by Shah Rukh and Malaika Arora, which is hummable and also at the end of the film, which is also good.
Overall, a novel attempt by the director, but nothing else is really in favour of it.Go watch it if u have time and money:) to spend. Not Recommended
