A hard hitting drama

Karan Johar’s KANK is hard hitting and explosive. It is one of the most thought provoking film to reach the screen in recent memory. The difference between KANK and numerous other, more routine films of the exta marital genre begins with the script.

KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA narrates the story of two families -- Sarans and Talwars -- both not connected to one another. But circumstances bring them together. Dev Saran [Shah Rukh Khan] has an uneasy and troubled relationship with his wife Rhea [Preity Zinta] and son Arjun [child artist Ahsaas]. He resents his wife’s growing s..uccess and in the process, ends up turning all his anger towards his loved ones.

Maya Talwar’s [Rani Mukherji] relationship with her husband Rishi [Abhishek Bachchan] is layered with a lot of self-doubt and question. She is unable to whip up enough passion for Rishi and is disappointed that her love for him does not match her own expectations of what it ought to be. This dilemma pulls her further apart from him, thereby causing a strain on their marital life.

One fine day, Dev and Maya’s path cross each other…

Smart, insightful and consistently engaging, Karan’s screenplay is a treat for anyone who views films as a medium for both art and excercise for mind .It takes Kank nearly three hours to spin its tale, but how quickly these three hours fly past one just does not realise. Karan maintains tight control of every scene. The pace of the film is just right; it has moments of drama, of tension and emotions. From the execution point of view, he is in form yet again.

Technically the film is one of the finest and polished products to come out of India to date and is akin from a Hollywood film.Music disappoints. I have been the BIGGEST SLE fan from films like DCH , BNB , Lakshya , but here the music for the most just fails to connect with the viewers

Abhishek is fantastic. The actor leaves a strong impression despite pitted against powerful performers. Undoubtedly, this is his career-best performance.

Amitabh is SUPERB as ever in a role that comes to him naturally. No doubt his comic timing is splendid and the actor excels at these kinds of roles and here in KANK he makes his role look easy. From his tongue-in-cheek one liners to his facial expressions to his body language he plays the sexy Sam to perfection.

SRK adds yet another feather in his cap with a performance that could’ve been essayed only by a master performer. His confrontations with Preity are exemplary. Rani gets a role to prove her talent and she more than lives up to the expectations

.Preity is a complete natural but she is regulated to a backseat and though she is there throughout the movie and does make her presence felt it is obvious that the focus is clearly more on Rani and SRK.

If you need more than words and are looking for a feel good love story, steer clear, you will only be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a piece that will intrigue your senses, causing you to examine your own soul, your own convictions, then I highly recommend KANK.
