A Mature Attempt By Johar Junior!!!!!

First of all, the movie reminded me a lot of CLOSER, a hollywood movie starring Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman. Whether Karan was influenced or is it a coincidence I do not know, but the theme is similar.....if anybody has more info about this, please do tell me about it...

Ok here goes....

None of my friends liked this movie……..others who heard them cribbing, didn’t want to see it, neither did I after getting to know that it was 3 hrs 15 min long……but fate isn’t without a sense of irony…a major coincidence and I saw myself in the Mth row of a movie hall, screening KANK!!! It was a late night show scheduled to start at 2145 hours. At 2200 hours they started rolling trailers……..(disgusting time sense considering the monry charged for the ticket). Anyway, the trailers were not disappointing. After the previews of Dhoom 2, Aahista Aahista and Aap Ki Khaatir…..

(Finally) the movie began…….with a soccer match, just like K3G begins with a cricket match….(why Johar why???)…..anyway, we meet the 4 essential characters of the movie, Dev, Maya, Rhea and Rishi that is Shahrukh, Rani, Preity and Abhishek respectively. Dev is a hot football star, Rhea works with a fashion magazine, Maya is a teacher and Rishi runs an event management company (I’m not too sure about this though)….anyway, Dev is married to Rhea and its “Rishi weds Maya” day. Maya seems to be confused about her decision to marry Rishi and Dev seems to be frustrated with his wife’s busy schedule. A chance meeting between the two sets off the tone of the movie…..2 married persons find solace in each others misery and bond famously with each other finding the passion, the connection that seems to be missing with their respective spouse. They fall hopelessly in love with each other. They know, what they’re doing is wrong, but just can’t seem to stay away from each other… When their partners get to know about their affair, both of them get separated from their spouse and the love birds start leading the lives of quite desperation and loneliness due to some misconception.

What’s interesting about this movie is that the subject is not knew but the way it has been handled is more realistic than any other movie handling extra-marital affairs. The characters in the movie are not heroes and stars, but someone you can relate with or people who’ll remind you of someone you know. Shahrukh Khan gives a sentimental (overly sentimental at times) performance. Rani Mukherjee plays a confused wife, Preity Zinta plays a successful mom who has no time for her son and Abhishek plays a businessman with a heart and a lot of love for his wife……Another interesting thing, I noticed in this movie is that, it may be the first time in the history of cinema, which shows that people who attend late night parties and pubs are not necessarily the unfaithful ones in a relationship, and the ones who a more solemn and down to earth are not necessarily the faithful ones….We see Rishi and Rhea dancing away to DISCO numbers and shaking a leg at parties, but they are more sincere and faithful to their partners than their homely, “I hate partying” partners….good one Mr.Johar, a pat on the back for that…

Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy give no real sense of joy.

Their music is nothing different form what they’ve already offered,

And Karan Johar also doesn’t seem to have bothered.

If it was Pretty Woman in Kal Ho Naa Ho, its Rock n Roll in KANK

If it was It’s The Time to disco, it’s Where’s The Party Tonight

It it was Kuch To Hua Hai, it is Tumhi Dekho Naa

The title songs are also in similar mood,

But Mitwa is one song worthy of appreciation.

Kiron Kher is Dev’s mum. Dev’s son is a cute kid you will not hate. Kajol, John Abraham and Arjun Rampal offer surprise appearances. You must be wondering why I haven’t mentioned anything about Mr.Bachchan, its because the less said the better about his character.

Parental Advisory – Do not take your kids along for this movie. “Strictly for adults” stuff.

All in all, a nice subject. Good direction in parts. Mindless song and dance sequences. Scintillating performances. Good but not new tunes. Nice cinematography and a standout performance by Abhishek makes KANK a debatable movie. Worth a dekko.
