Shahrukh-Karan ka magic chalega kya?
After the brilliant trial reports , great reviews I expected KANK to be the film of the year. But it isnt.
KANk is no great film to make it clear, but its a nice entertaining film that u will immensely enjoy watching once or even twice but it doesnt have the timeless quality that DDLJ, KKHH, Mohabbatein or to an extent even Veer Zaara had.
The concept is good and has been executed well, the screenplay has a nice flow to it and has the ability to keep the audiences glued to their seats. The story has been dealt in a unique way, its a different take on the relationships and the film is quite bold, not in a sexual way but as a concept its quite Bold.
Dialogues are brilliant and Niranjan Iyengar after KHNH displays once again what a good writer he is.Karan johar has definitely made a much much much much better film than K3G. In some of the scenes his work is Genius.More about that later.
But some of the things just didnt work for me .
I just cudnt understand Maya’s trauma, she had a good husband, so caring that he even didnt had any problem that she can never bear his child. Rishi had enough reasons to have a relationship out of his marriage, Maya shud have been so grateful that she got such an understanding husband. but it was a case of "Ulta Chor kotwaal ko daante". that was weakest link in KANK.Where as Shahrukh-preity relationship has been executed well and their scenes are interesting. Shahrukh’s trauma comes across very well, tho lot of the credit goes to his performance rather than anything else.Some scenes in the second half starts to test your patience as they tend to get repititive. The climax, tho good was long , it cud have been much tighter. The title song doesnt make much of a mark.
But there are plenty of scenes that make KANK an immensely enjoyable film.
1.The Shahrukh-Rani discussing Mohabbat and Zindagi on the bench before her marriage.
2."the Black beast" misunderstanding between Shahrukh and rani, (Sharukh saying "Black beast ban gayi" was howlarious)
3.Shahrukh, Rani spotting Amitabh n kiran kher outside the station hugging each other, and then shahrukh asking them "nahin , iraada kya hai aapka". just too good.
4.The scene before Rock n roll and scene after that, amitabh was great in those scenes.
5.The massage scene.
6.Shahrukh saying "I love u" to rani at the station.
7.The dining table scene just fantastic.
8.the ballad scene , too good.
9.Abhishek-rani scene in the pre climax.
Music is good, Mitwa being a pick of the lot. It comes at the right time and gives the film right momentum. WTPT was fun.Tumhi dekho na dreamy, quite well shot. RNr soniye was better than it was on the idiot box but still nuthing great. Only Shahrukh’s expressions made the song interesting. Title song looked routine.
technically the film is very sound, only the editing shud have been crisper
Coming to the performances, Rani was great but her character didnt make much sense to me. but she did quite well.Preity was fantastic and was looking super sexy. Abhishek was nice but it didnt evoke the sympathy that it was expected to evoke, but I balme it on the thin characterisation.Bachchan Sr. was great, a very different role for him and he does it with great elan.Just check out his expressions when Shahrukh announces his love for rani on the Dining table.Genius.
But what makes KANK work like its working now is that one supremely gifted actor called Shahrukh khan. The anger, the restless ness, the insecurity, the jealousness, the sarcasm that Dev saran suffers from has been portrayed brilliantly by SRK .No one can do black comedy as good as Shahrukh. Dialogues which sound routine on paper become so enjoyable when Shahrukh mouths them, he gives them that extra punch.Karan has given him a better role than his previous ventures, but its Shahrukh who makes it all the more better.This is not his best role or performance but still KANK works because of Shahrukh khan.
KANK is flawed just like the character in the film DEV SARAN but as u end up liking Dev Saran, the character, the same way u end up even liking KANK. As an end product its a nice "different" entertaining film.At the boxoffice its success is inevitable but its range will depend on the general audience’s feed back.
I was surrounded by girls and after the show ended I just saw them and most of them were sobbing so it seems even this time Shahrukh- Karan ka magic chal gaya.
