No doubt that the basic pretext of the movie KANK is same as CLOSER and Silsila, but it is Karan Johar’s direction that still manages to make for a watchable film. Yes, the subject is of a kind that may appear too taboo for many to digest, but those who watch the movie would be thoroughly engaged for most part of the movie.
The movie revolves around two married couples, and the changing equations between them. Rhea (Preity Zinta) is a successful career woman, giving her husband, Dev (Shah Rukh Khan) a complex and leaving him frustrated about the lack of attention. Maya (Rani Mukherjee) finds herself in an incompatible marriage where her emotional needs are not met by her husband (Abhishek Bachchan).
Maya and Dev find themselves drawn to each other and attempt to help each other improve their marriages. In the process, they get strongly attaracted to each other
KANK is a brave attempt by Karan Johar who has directed candy floss love stories in the past like KKHH amongst others. The film told in a very familiar tone but with utmost sincerity and makes its impact from the very first reel and by the time it ends it has totally engrossed you in itself.
The first half is well built and the chemistry between Abhishek-Rani and SRK-Preity is amongst the most watchable aspects of the film. Johar treats those sequences delicately and the impact that the sequences create establish a strong ground for the drama that is to follow. The sequence between Rani and SRK when they confess their for love each other leave you spellbound.Climax is brilliant as well and unpredictable .That’s why it even appeals more.
Music is of a mixed variety. Although ’Party’ and the title track are the pick of the lot, a couple of numbers are plain average. The locales of NY and Malesiya are a visual treat.
The life of the enterprise is undoubtedly Rani, who looks good, delivers her lines effectively and emotes with utmost conviction.Abhishek is very controlled and handles this difficult role with sincerity. SRK handles his complex role with flourish.Preity leaves an impression in a brief role. Amitabh is superb as sexy saim . Kiron Kher is equally nice.
KANK is a mature film which will find it audience in metros .
