Its been more than a month since the movie got released. One thing that strikes me the most about the film, if you still havent seen it, is the clarity with which the director has treated the script. There is nothing fluffy or superficial about the story, it is perfectly woven into an engrossing plot.
After a series of Oscar winning Hollywood films, Kahaani was the kind of distraction that anyone couldve asked for from Bollywood. The movie is set in Kolkata, with a bit of idealism laced in it, but then it is not something for which you can criticise the movie! The idealism of the young rookie cop, the adorable police station, where you can walk in seven months pregnant and not be harrowed. Kolkata is shown to be the dream city to unravel terrorism. But, thanks to Vidya Balan, who acts not only with utmost sincerity, she really takes control of the story and how it progresses. Youre more with her inside the film, than just outside, watching it. You gasp when just before the intermission, you are led to believe youve lost her. A word about the LIC agent, who has now gone viral across networking websites, inspiring animated jokes and cartoons, hes quite the lethal counterpart to his more suave Hollywood killers, albeit, hes slow, tedious and of course, ominous.
The movie, however, disappoints towards the end, when you see a mellowed Vidya Balan, hand-holding the audience to reveal the underlying suspense. It is kind of a little too soft for a film dealing with such a hard hitting subject. But then, the director leaves you asking, so was it the woman and her kahaani that had you interested or the kahaani itself?
