Just watched Kana Kanden on video (Sorry here in the US, no theatres screening Tamil movies regularly; last tamil movie was the stunning Chandramukhi!). I got a above average print of Kana Kanden which wasnt bad at all and watched it. And after watching it, I felt satisfied at having watched a good movie with good efforts from all involved with the movie. Storyline Srikkanth is like a scientist who tries to research on improving the purity of drinking water. Gopika is his childhood friend and they fall in love and get married (against the wishes of Gopika’s brother). Gopika’s friend, Prithviraj is a cool businessman who lends money. But he has an other side. What is it? How does that relate to Srikanth-Gopika? Thats the story. Watch it to experience the suspense. Srikanth A much improved actor from his Rojakootam and April Madhathil days. He looks handsome and can act too. If he improves his dancing, he can waltzhis way to the top. His expressions are good to watch and his chemistry with Gopika is mesmerising. One of the best pairs of recent times and adds to the elite list of Surya-Jyothika, Vijay-Trisha. Gopika A very good performance from her! She looks downright gorgeous. She mixes glamour and performance here wonderfully. She has a wonderful future ahead in Tamil Cinema and if Kana Kanden is the start, then its all roses for her here in Tamil Cinema. She looks superb with Srikanth. Again with Gopika, dancing needs to be improved if she has to touch the heights of Simran and Jyotika. Prithviraj HAIL THE NEW VILLIAN OF TAMIL CINEMA!!! This movie is solely Prithviraj’s. A terrific and knockout performance from this new bad guy of Tamil Cinema. His cool approach is highly commendable. But he should not go the Rehman way and try to be a hero. He should stick to the job of a villian or character roles. He has some resemblances to another baddie, Manoj K Jayan (Thirumalai). He dances well too and this is proved through the song Aiyya Ramaya Vivek Some good social message tinged comedy from Vivek. But not his best certainly and also not among his top 5. Direction A very good first attempt from cinematographer KV Anand. The mistake he did was release his movie when Chandramukhi is roaring all over Tamil Nadu. I am hearing that the movie has slipped badly. Only due to the fact that Chandramukhi is reigning supreme all over. Or else, this movie is a sure shot superhit. Music This guy is on a purple patch! Whatever he does gets him success. But his work is also highly commendable. He knows the audience pulse better than anyone else now and gives out songs to please the masses. His score in Chandramukhi was very very entertainning and his score here in Kana Kanden is of truly high class. Aiyya Ramaya song was the most average one though. Udit spoiled the song totally!! Overall rating: Watch this movie!! It has a very good storyline, fantastic performances, a new hit screen pair, etc.
