Struggler

I am listening to the music of a new Tamil Movie Manathodu Mazhaikalam as I write this. I wanted to see what people at MS think of him as a Music director and I found no reviews.

I feel very sad as I listen to these songs. They are absolutely lifeless. He has obviously tried his best but then the only word I can use to describe the music is ’’SAD’’. Its just not happening. Same with ’’Mercury Pookal’’. His music is neither modern and hip nor traditional and classy.

I am not an expert reviewer to string together his works and develop an essay but from what little I know, I think all of Karthik Raja’s songs sound the same. I’m not talking about the tunes. I’m talking about the tone - the sound. Know what I mean...I feel a lack of depth. They all sound dull and boring with those shrill, high pitched voices. There is one song in Manathodu Mazhaikalam by sadhana sargam and (yugh) jassie gift. Nice ragam but crass treatment.

I really liked a couple of songs in Dumm Dumm and then Grahan was also good. Kaadhala Kaadhala - okay. There was also this nice song ’’Veesum Katrukku poovai theriayada’’ - the vikram-maheshwari-ajit movie. Then, wonder whatever happened to him. I am sorry I don’t even remember any of this other movies. Karthik Raja seems prove again that Art is not a heredity thing. Art and creativity is something that just happens. What say?

This is the reason I would hate to compare him with Ilayaraja (ofcourse noone can be or should be compared with Ilayaraja) or even Yuvan Shankar Raja. I mean, its not fair. But its obvious that Karthik Raja is a struggler. Or is his REAL strength yet to be brought out? I wonder. I heard somewhere that he helped Ilayaraja in the making of Thiruvasagam. Well... that’s it then.

Whether his music clicks or not, Karthik Raja seems to be insisting on being original. Is that a good sign? What’s the point? Where’s the learning then? Where’s the growth?

As I almost finish writing this, the songs that I was listening to are over and I didn’t even realize it!

I am sure there are many really knowledgeable music lovers in MS. Can you please throw light. Me? I am just an ardent music lover not an expert. I don’t mean offense to Karthik Raja - just that I feel bad for him. I am sure I will never feel anything like this for whatzhiz name Dheena or Srikanth Deva or Imman....
