Ekta and women straightjacketed!!

This new Ekta factory serial really keeps me hooked but for a mixed assortment of reasons. This story of 3 sisters standing together despite all odds and the fact that despite all storms ravaging through their life from all directions( be it Ranvir, Jai’s sister, Piya’s sister-in-law, Roshni and even Jai himself, to an extent), they manage to find their foothold in this slippery world with spikes of values and pure selfless love.

Before I explain my title, let me say a few positives of this serial. It keeps me so hooked that I record it on my VCR when I’m out on work. I never miss an episode of it. The charecterization is superb and well crafted. Aside from the five main protagonists( including Jai and Pushkar), side charecters are pretty well developed. We do get a few light moments thanks to Dadi. Ppushkar’s mom is another example. I like the potrayal of Pushkar. He is the most balanced- modern, cool but sticking to his core values.

Plot is where I feel Ekta consistently fails. She tries to show Indian women to be home bound, sacrificial lambs who bear all ills to uphold tradition, for whom office work is second priority. This must end. I mean cmon Ekta, have some respect for yourself. TV is a mass media through which modern developmental ideas for gender parity can be widely and easily propogated. Instead all you show here is Bani bearing all tortures for marraige. Spineless!! She is educated. At one go, she can walk out of both Walia house and her job. She is capable but she hides them, just as Indian women have done for centuries. Somewhere subconciously both men and women of our country have accepted this fact and you are rising on TRP charts. This began with KKusum and still continues. I loved your no-nonsense Gauri in Kutumb but it so happens the public didn’t to that extent. Follow your heart please and if your heart is reflected in these serials, please give more air-time to successful women like Roshni-atleast for a social cause- instead of showing them as villains. Keep that balance.

This serial is fantastic but if improved upon, it can really revolutionize the way people watch serials- not an extension of their daily life but somewhere in the middle of that long road of where we are and where we really should be, as a mature and dynamic society.
