"Subah ka bhoolah, agar shyam go ghar aa jaaye, toh usse bhoolah nahin kehte"
*a line** heard many times in Indian cinema, **a line** that makes everyone think, **a line** that was the tagline of one of Indian cinemas classic - KHALNAYAK.
A guy that was the villain, the guy that wanted to be the villain - yet the audience felt for this man but the question is why?
Bollywood films usually had the good characters and the bad characters but very rarely you saw the in-between. Sanjay Dutt as Balu Balram was that grey character and the whole of the audience realised that here was a man, who kills, steals, doesnt respect anyone ACTUALLY was a man who was bought up with the influence of people who used him for needs.
Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Rakhee, Anupam Kher, Ramya all played their roles with elan but the star, undoubtedly, was Sanjay Dutt - a career defining role for him as the menace, yet lovable, Balu Balram.
Subhash Ghai who was THE director of the 80s and early 90s directed this film and you could see his stamp on all scenes
Though the film was surrounded by controversy with the so-called vulgar songcholi ke peeche - no one took away the fact, that this was one of the best commercial films with a meaning that very rarely, was put up by Indian cinema.
The music was very good - Aye Sahib, Maa Tujhe Salaam, Choli Ke Peeche, Khalnayak Hoon Main all were wonderful and suited the film to the T. A special mention to the lyrics of Khalnayak Hoon Main and Maa Tujhe Salaam, WONDERFUL
The ending of the film happens to be my favourite, where Sanjay becomes the boss but sees Madhuris picture in the newspaper and one of his men reads out that Madhuri is actually going in jail for a long time and Sanjay begins to laugh, yet you see him in pain. AWESOME!
A personal favourite of mine, as this was the film that made me fall in love with Hindi cinema.
"Saara samundar mere paas hai, ek bhoond paani, meri pyaas hai"
*IN MY BOOKS - A CLASSIC!*
