Kick – Style Over Substance

Salman Khan has done a lot of south movie remakes in the past few years and strangely they have clicked at the box office. Salman Khan Movies are critic proof. Whatever critic says, still his movies will do 100 Crore plus business. Salman Khan is the first Bollywood superstar with 7 films in the 100 crore plus club, the love and hate relationship with salman movies continues. He is a star who can do anything on screen and his fans will still cheer for him. Most of the times Salman chooses films which do not require to stress brain even a bit. Salman Khan knows he is there to entertain the masses, not much different than south superstar Rajnikanth.

Kick is the official remake of a Ravi Teja’s 2009 Telugu blockbuster also called Kick. The story isn’t important as long as the camera lingers on Salman Khan as(Devi Lal Singh) with a different life style doing something purposeful & gets a ‘kick’ out of doing the oddest things in life. He falls in love with a psychiatrist, Jacqueline Fernandez(Shaina). All of a sudden there is a new twist in the plot, Salman(Devi La) becomes Devil a Robin Hood type masked robber who steals from the rich to give to the poor & needy. Police inspector Randeep Hooda(Himanshu Tyagi) & Salman Khan( Devi Singh) starts playing the cat & mouse game. Nawazuddin Siddiqui(Shiv Gajra) plays the baddie in the most unconventional way. Though the story of the movie is pretty serious, the director has chosen comedy as the way of expression.

Despite being illogical at various spots, this movie is entertaining with a few social messages. The movie lacks pace in the first half and do appear prolonged at times. The film gradually grows on till interval and raises expectation. Later, it goes down without lack of content. A beautiful idea is wasted because it is half baked and not fully exploited. This film has similarities to movies like Gentleman and Dhoom 3.

The acting in ‘Kick’ is consistently inconsistent. Most of the characters have moments where they shine, but these moments are few and far between. Salman Khan is in full form in this movie and sizzles on screen every time he is there. He justifies his character and comes up with a commendable performance. Jacqueine Fernandez is a breath of freshness one want to inhale more & more. She lives her character and in spite of not many variations, shows signs of brilliance. Randeep Hooda has a towering presence & is perfect as a super cop who is set out to nab the devil. Nawazuddin Siddique is a magnificent actor who keeps getting better, and this is him at his finest. Mithun Chakraborty and Saurabh Shukla did their job pretty well & fit in their roles. Sanjay Mishra & Archana Puran Singh deliver required humour and are great in their respective characters.

The entertainment value of ‘Kick’ is easily the most enjoyable part of the film. Debutant Director Sajid Nadiadwala has very well adopted the successful formula of Salman Khan’s previous blockbuster movies, Just to give the super hero Salman a good entrance, punch in a few dialogues, throw in a romantic angle with a few mushy songs, make him dance & romance, he knows that he have a money minting blockbuster ‘Kick’.

The action sequences are elaborate, the visual effects are incredible and cinematography is a visual feast. Dialogues are witty and breathe life into the film. Music by Himesh Reshamiya is already topping the chart busters. Jumme Ki Raat and Yaar Na Mile are visually delighting.

To sum it up, Kick is tailor-made for those who hero-worship Salman Khan. It’s a standard entertainer with all ingredients like action, emotion, romance, comedy, songs & dance are associated with commercial cinema are mixed and served efficiently, though the dish itself becomes cold by the end. Don’t go looking for story, substance, or subtleties.  Watch ‘Kick’ for its stylish presentation, it hasn’t got anything else to offer. Salman Khan movies Dil mein aate hai, samajh mein nahin.
