King Kong
Peter Jackson has done it again. If you thought lord of the rings was good – kk is simply amazing. If titanic was bid, kk is massive. That’s right you will simply run out of words trying to describe this blockbuster. It was a blockbuster the day it was made. A remake of the classic by the same name raises the same question – why do we have such a passion for watching a “fragile” girl in the paws of a “beast”? the generation before us loved the original and our generation will love this classic.
The story – for those ignorant people is really not the story of an overgrown gorilla, but the wannabe Hollywood actress/stage performer. It is not the story of a giant who is a “King” in his own world, but that of an orphan girl in the depression era who has no control over her own fate. All the time she is controlled and manipulated by ruthless movie producers, ship captains, native tribesmen and even by the beast who loves her. The only person who she can rely on to save her is the writer who loves her, but even he is a pawn in the hands of money seeking showmen. That it is a story of the beauty and not the beast is best reflected in the fact that the beast does not make an appearance till almost the end of the first half of the movie.
Over and above all the big screen hits ever made, this one is surely going to walk away with all the Oscars this time. Not to mention the moolah it’s going to make for the producers.
Ok those are the god points of the movie – now the not-so-good stuff. Well the first one that hits you is the length of the movie – like in lotr, this one goes on and on and on….. one does feel at some places a little creative editing would have made it much better.
Would not recommend watching it on a pirated vcd at home – this one is a big screen movie and deserves the “price of an admittance ticket”. The scenes of the dinosaurs stampede and their fight with Kong are the best scenes ever made in the history of motion pictures.
Finally what is it with Peter Jackson and his obsessions with “Walls” and “Gates”. They were there in lotr and are predominant fixtures in kk. Admitted that they are not his stories and the blam should lie with thte respective writers, but honestly the is some serious psycho-analytical mumbo-jumbo going on in PJ’s head – some form of “repressed sexuality (read walled) wanting to open the doors (read gates) of pleasure” would come to you in case you are a student of Freud as yours truly.
