Buri Kismat!

Put together a ridiculous plot, a flabby, wannabe-bubbly female lead, a diminutive, box-office-flop male lead, a cameo by a talented actress done complete injustice and you get… a flop named Kismat Konnection!

“Aye pappi..”– I hummed excitedly all the way to the theater, elated to have finally got the tickets to the movie. I came out of the theater humming the same song, not because I loved the movie, but because I had stuffed my ears with my I-pod’s ear phones and was (and had been) listening to the song throughout the movie, just to keep myself awake.

What the director was thinking, casting Vidya Balan and Shahid together, a sure-shot formula for an all-time flop, I don’t know. Vidya looks like a wannabe-hip version of Shahid’s aunt. Admittedly she looks better with the new hair style and clothes, but that’s not enough to spark chemistry with Kareena’s ex. Shahid deserves a round of applause for this brave act none would have dared to carryout, especially since people expected more out of him after his single hit, Jab We Met. But Juhi? What is wrong with her, I want to know. Is she so hard-up for offers that she was willing to stoop this low?

The plot is pretty simple (read inane). Everything in Shahid’s life is wrong. It’s as though he was bad luck personified. Then comes along his aunt-like lady love (Vidya), who turns all his awful situations into ones that make him smile, with just a snap of her chubby fingers. Juhi is a fortune-teller with a difference.

The difference is that she is pretty, rich, has only Shahid as her customer, and doesn’t really fortune-tell (not that it’s a difference!). She advises Shahid to stick to the stout little Vidya no matter what, since only she could bring him luck. Poor make-up, horrendous acting, some job-interviews gone bad, Shahid’s final victory, Vidya’s cheating boyfriend, and the Shahid-Vidya love blossoming follow, completing the dull movie. If you have an awful enemy you’d like to kill by slow poisoning, this is the movie to take him/her to!
