It was with a lot of hopes that I went to watch the premier show of the much awaited Kites - And why not? A Latin heroine, the most perfect of our actors, the only one who can hold his own against Aamir Khan and SRK, Rakesh Roshan team, et al. But from the start of the movie to the very end, it was an awful disappointment. Kites never really flies, just crashes and burns. The most glaring error seems to be a lack of a solid storyline. Somebody forgot that just putting in the hottest Indian superstar with a latin beauty, and 1 great song and rumours of a romance between the lead actors doesn’t make a great movie.
The weak storyline, a street guy marrying a girl for money, and falling in love with a latina streetgirl who marries the girl’s brother for the same reason is the whole story of the movie. The way in which the story is shown, shifting between present and flashbacks doesnt help either. Must say the camera work is sort of slick though. There are of course a few good things about the movie. Hrithik’s Dance (But of course), the amazingly good looking lead pair, Mori’s Spanish too sounds nice, I guess its got to do with the language, it is so rhythmic...Oh and the Muscle cars (Auto lovers have something to drool throughout), and decent, visually pleasing locales.
Rest all its a bore. You spend 2 hours wondering what’s happening, will anything happen and My God, why aint this getting over???
All in all, a big disappointment for all Hrithik fans. Such a superb actor doing such a horrendous movie. He does act well, but even that cannot make up for a lack of proper storyline. Leaves Aamir Khan as the only actor who comes up with a sterling movie each and every time!!
