Welcome to Kittie Party !

This review is strictly for female MS readers !!! lol :)

Since I am in mood to write about tele-serials, here is a current favourite one :

Kittie Party is a new serial on Zee TV, telecasted at 10.00pm sun-thursday. Do not confuse it with another of those ’’ekta kapoor & her lucky K serial’’ The letter K is the only resemblance between the two otherwise even though it is a women related serial Kittie Party is much better than the saas-bahu thing we all have to bear on prime time TV ! Kittie party is a refreshing change.

The serial is about eight women from different background & age group, who meet every month for a kitty party. In the process, the serial traces their individual lives, loves, jealousies and above all their bonding.

For those who do not know about Kitty party system, I’ll try to explain as best as I can :

This is very common among the high society women [who have nothing much to do besides looking after themselves &

visiting beauty parlours] Every month, each member dishes out a said amount of money, say 50, 000 bucks & this collection is given to the member who wins the chit round. For the time she wins this round this member need not contribute to the collection. This is followed by a card session or partying/picnic etc. NOW, before any reader [who may be a kitty party member somewhere] blasts me for writing this definition, please note that this is how people generally view kitty parties. Kittie party is just an extension of the chit fund or the bhishi as it’s also called in Mumbai. Today it has become very common and such parties do not necessarily end up in taash or gamblings.

This is also what makes the serial ’’Kittie Party’’ different from the actual concept of kittie parties that we have. The women, who form this kittie group share a unique bond which helps them through their daily activities, problems and choices.

Each of the women in Kittie Party has her family story, husbands, children, and boyfriends. Though the main protagonists are women, each has different colours, shades. They meet only once a month at the kittie, at the same time they are talking to each other, meeting somewhere or the other, they are discussing what is happening in their lives, with the husband, their business, their children, etc.

The concept of the story is by Shobha De and the known actors are Kiran Kumar, Poonam Dhillon, Achint Kaur, Maya Alagh, Kavita Kapoor, Deepshikha & the ILU ILU boy Vivek Mushran.

All the eight women in the group are suitable for the role & recently there has been an addition of another character Vasundhra, who is a ambitious women but holds a lifetime grudge against Manju [Poonam Dillion]. Manju is the wife of a rich industrialist Manoviraj [Kiran Kumar] and she is also hated by Reva [who was Manoviraj’s ex-lover].

Reva [Kavita Kapoor]is excellent as the b-i-t-c-h of the whole group. All the other members hate her but cannot get rid of her as she is already a part of their Kitty. However, she is the most interesting character in the serial. There are many shades to her & she is often potrayed as the heartless wife & friend. She’s very aggressive and upfront as a businesswoman. But at the sametime she has very compassionate, with her friend’s children.

Then there is Pixie [Achint Kaur] a divorcee with a young kid, Pixie is a fashion designer, trying to be independent and giving the best for her son Rohan. She is always in trouble but has full support of her kittie party friends. Kuku [Deepshika] is the daredevil of the group. Working as a PR manager in a big hotel, she doesn’t think twice before proposing her boss or when she meets his fiancee, Kuku challenges her that she would one day get her man !!

Another interesting character is Teena, who is a very modern girl but married in a very conservative family. Her in-laws are very orthodox and believe in sari clad bahus being the izzat of their family. Naturally, they don’t want Teena to be a part of this Kittie Party and never hesitate to insult her friends whenever they get a chance. Much of the serial covers the story of how Teena’s kittie friends help her & her family during their crisis time & thus are able to convert their thoughts on Kittie Parties. These episodes were very interesting but I wonder if any such ’’orthodox’’ people ever watch this serial ! lol :)

I like to watch this serial because it doesn’t show the women as Aunties draped in heavy silk saris with their dangling mangal sutras but their style is more practical, with fashionable clothes and accessories. I also like the fact that none of the 8 characters have been potrayed as the seedhi-saadi pativarta [as Tulsi is saas bahu thi serial] or even as the modern day will-kill-for-vengeance babe [Pallavi in Kahani ghar ghar ki]. Here all the women have their good n bad points and when they meet for their Kitty party there is a lot of bonding and a little bit of bitching ;)
