K. J. Somaiya Institute of Engineering and Information Technology(KJSIEIT) was established in the year 2001 and is affiliated to the Somaiya Trust. It is located in Sion. Somaiya owns massive piece of land on which our college and K. J. Somaiya Hospital & Medical College was established.
I joined this college in the year 2011, after completing my diploma. It was little difficult to get admission in this college due to high cut off. Eventually I secured admission in Electronics and Telecommunication through 2nd CAP list. Since I was from diploma, I was directly admitted to 2nd year.
Initially I had my reservation of joining this college because the college campus comprised of a single building. I had desired to join a college with a good campus where I could enjoy. As the college was affiliated to Somaiya group, I eventually joined.
Location Of college
KJSIEIT is located in sion and is exactly opposite eastern expressway. The college can be accessed through either Sion or Chunabatti stations. The problem when coming from sion is that the college is located a little far from station and many Rickshaw’s refuse to ply due to its isolated location. The other option is Chunabhatti Station, but the problem here is that you have to cross a narrow bridge through the slum areas near the station. The area is pretty filthy. Thankfully, I had my own bike, so travelling was never a problem for me.
Infrastructure:
Like I mentioned before the college is a single 8 storey building. The building looked old when I had joined and it seemed that it was not renovated since its inception. After a few months of joining, the building underwent renovation and it was painted. So now the building looks new.
The classroom are good. Most of the time they are clean, the cleaning staff works diligently. All the classrooms above 2nd floor were well ventilated due to free flow of air as there was no other buildings miles apart. The equipments in the labs were replaced by new ones. So we got to lay hands on new equipment which made attending the practical fun as we could get the reading really fast.
Teaching faculty is good at least for the electronics and telecommunication branch. They were really helpful and were easily accessible if we had any doubts. Teachers were regular in taking lectures. Many subjects were taught to us using projector which enhanced the learning experience. Maintaining Attendance above 75% is compulsory, which I felt was a little harsh. So people who are looking to bunk lectures in this college be careful.
The first thing people asked me when I joined college was “Canteen Kaisa hai?”
Like I said the building underwent renovation, the canteen too was painted. The food was mediocre and expensive. I avoided eating from canteen and got my own lunch box. Students residing in hostel had to eat the canteen food.
Now let’s talk about the social events the college conducted. In this regard I would give 5star to KJSIEIT. The management regularly held events and competitions which helped students to know more about their talents. The 3 main Events in an year were:
• Renaissance- This was our technical festival. Since we had huge ground, many events were held in it. Large number of college’s would be invited to take part. During the tech fest we would get to see many robots and other contraptions which the students would make to win the grand prize
• Surge- All the students would eagerly wait for this event because this was our cultural event and we would get to dance and have fun. The events included personality contest, dance and singing contest and fashion show.
• Score- Score being our sports event I would always take part in it because I love playing sports.
The placement department is also very active and works hard to get good companies on our campus for students to get placed. Aptitude test preparation sessions are held to help students to crack the test. Mock interviews are conducted to bring the best out of students.
In all I had a great 3years in KJSIEIT. Now after I completed my studies, I miss my college life and my friends. I agree this college is little strict with regard to attendance but overall you will have an enjoyable time here. So guys who are looking for a college which regularly conducts social events and provides good academic experience and excellent teaching do join this college.
