Different but dull!

After the blockbuster movie called Kaho na pyaar hain, its team is back with a new venture- Koi Mil Gaya. Its music is not very impressive, though 2 or 3 songs are marvelous.

It is being said that Koi Mil Gaya has very unusual theme. I suppose this isn’t a romantic film. Is it a sci-fi thriller? Is it a children’s film, like Mr. India? (The music gives a hint that it is made for children-like Mr. India.)

And don’t even get me started on the trailers; let’s just focus on its music.

Sticking to Bollywood norms, director Rakesh Roshan has included 8 songs in his sci-fi thriller. Veteran music director Rajesh Roshan has composed the music.

The music is made in accordance with the film’s unusual theme. Almost every track starts with very western, techno-type music.

It is very different type of music- made exclusively for a scientific/ spacecraft thriller. This music is somewhat similar to the music played in Hollywood sci-fi flicks when a ‘flying saucer’/ UFO arrives or departs.

It is commendable that this team has tried to do something different in music category, but unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out very well.

From listener’s point of view, except a few tracks, melody is absent; songs are unusual and not instantly likable.

This album doesn’t have the Rajesh Roshan touch of “dil mera”, “chaand sitare”, “pyaar mein hota hain kya jaadoo”, and “ muz se naraaz ho”. He has composed many slow, soft, melodious songs in the past, but this time, he has focused on fast, techno-tracks. Chorus is also used very effectively in many songs.

In effect, the songs are neither very romantic nor very fast. They don’t belong to a particular genre.

=====================================================

Some songs are sweet and melodious and the title track is the cutest.

1)Koi mil Gaya…kaun mil gaya’…………4.5/5

Chitra and Udit Narayan have beautifully sung this song. Undoubtedly the best track from the album, this romantic, soft, soothing song is instantly likable. The music is stupendous. Lyricist Ibrahim Ashq has penned some romantic lines like-

“Khwabon khayalon khwaishon ko chehra mila,

Mere hone ka matlab mila,

Koi mil gaya….”

2)Idhar chala main udhar chala…………….4/5

It is also sweet, peppy song and it has a catchy rhythm. It is easy on ears, and it is one of the better songs of this album. This is a cool tune, perfect to cheer up your mood.

This time, Alka Yagnik joins Udit Narayan, and she has done a great job.

A great chemistry between singers, simple lyrics, and pleasant tune make this song special.

3)It’s magic…………1/5

What do you say about a song that starts like- “It’s magic”! Honestly, there is nothing magical about this one. It is noisy, and boring. The electric music fails to create much impact. It is a very fast track. Singer Taz (Stereo Nation) has tried to sing it well.

It seems that this fast number is created especially for film’s hero Hrithik Roshan’s dancing and muscle-flexing skills.

4)Haila Haila……...0.5/5

This is yet another boring, dull song that just shows how poor the music of this album is. It has dull lyrics by Dev Kohli (Haila haila ho aa aa- something like that- very pathetic…). It is a folk-type song, but dholki music is also wasted here. Udit and Alka couldn’t save this song.

Overall- a boring song that leaves only one question in your mind- “WHY?”

(Why did they keep this song in the album? Why did I listen to it? )

5)Jaadoo…1.5/5

The song starts with chorus. Adnan Sami and Alka Yagnik sing it well. Adnan Sami fans will like it because this is his only song in this album, and he has sung it with usual ease. It is an OK type of song- not very melodious, and not noisy or plain either. The background chorus is unique and nice on ears. It seems that this song is made for children. There is one more version of the same song; where Udit Narayan replaces Adnan Sami. Tune is same, and Alka Yagnik sings both the songs. Here dholki and drum have been used effectively.

Children will perhaps like this ‘jadoo’ type of song, but I am not even sure about that. (These days, kids are very smart!). Both the versions failed to impress me.

6)Instrumental tune…2.5/5

It is easy on ears. It has glimpses of the two nice songs- koi mil gaya and idhar chala, and hence it is likable.

7)En Panchiyon- 3/5

It has a nice, pleasant tune. It is basically a sweet song, and some children sing the chorus part. The lyrics are excellent, different and inspiring. Vocals by Shaan and Kavita Krishnamurthy are amazing. The highlight of the song is Shaan’s singing talent. This is his only song in the album and he is impressive. This song grows on you. Yes, as the lyrics have mention of birds, cute chirping sounds are included.

=====================================================

As we see, the average rating per song is 2.4/5. I will not recommend this album, since only 2-3 songs out of 7 are really good. Besides, even these songs are likely to become stale soon.

It can be argued that the songs will grow on you later on. But for that, you will have to keep listening to those songs again and again, and that seems like a punishment in itself. In short, there is not much repeat value.

Buy it only for those few good songs if you want. The music lacks richness, melody and passion. Comparing with Saathiya, Devdas or even Kaho na pyaar hain, this album is a disappointment. So, you can give it a pass.
