I had huge expectations for this album and was eagerly waiting for the release of this album. The release of this sound track did not carry any publicity and that hugely disppointed me. Added to the woes , the sound track was released 3 days before the release of the film ..Too bad !!!!!
The important thing about Karthik Raja is that he tends to be different while retaining the classical elements in the music. He is not bothered much about the trends though he understands them very well. Over the years his music has matured much with very less loops being used and more classical elements introduced in the music.
The theme of the movie should have excited KR and he has really seem to put his heart to this movie, both for songs and in BGM.
COming to the songs, BGM ..
1.Enga Poi SOlluven - SPB
It is quite refreshing to see a typical Illayraaja song from KR. Again, KR could have given a Rehman /Yuvan shankar Raja kind of melody with no Tabla, just using some strange sounds ...This song reminds of ENgae Nimmadhi song from Nadigan. I expected this song to be very strongly orchestral with violins, violas blarring , but in the end it was a very simple but touching the heart kind of song .The lyrics are very simple which exactly looks like how an auto-driver will sing .Also KR has taken care that there is no element of Schizophrenia in this song.
2.Onne Rendu - Tippu /Hariharan
This rock song will definetly not impress the listeneers at the first time. But it has an amazing rock flavor which you can appreciate 3-4 times. The prelude has an a amazing melody in whistle key that really haunts you .ALso this one of the few songs where the notes increase with time. The first interlude has an amazing solo violin with an amazing rock background. The second interlude has a jazz sax. Sure , this song has very good depth with a rock flavour and Jazz music mixing very well .
The high pitch in this song does irritate, but it is one of the strong points according to me. But one jarring point is that the charanam, towards end becomes noisy ..Probably KR could have disappointed .
3.Theme music -
KR has used a orchestra and a choir for this theme music. Parthipan has intelligently kept this music for the ring tone of the heroines cell phone. The picturization was perfect ( or may be KR composed after the scene was shot ) ..The choir part of teh song is just haunting. The song starts with a small keyboard kind of melody. One ha sto appreciate KR for trying to bring in some kind of a FORM in the music which is a bsic thing in western classics .
4.Thalattu
This music starts with a ssmall keyboard piece and moves to a haunting hindustani piece. First I could not understand why is this unnecessary variation. But when I saw the movie clip which I had this music , it was perfect .
5.Pada Pada-Karthik
KR is just perfect in this song. It is a short song some thing like that in Ullam Kollai Poguthey. Especially the music which comes in the end has trademark of Karthik raja. This song comes when the hero is over the cellphone and is msemserised by her voice. The last piece of music comes when the heroine asks here about her auto when he remembers that he has wlaked all teh way to meet her instead of driving his auto. Fantastic .
6.Adiye Kilye - Illayraja
A very nice refreshing Raaja kind of melody from KR .This song can be compared to the Pillai Thamarai song from ALBUM .Very clean, nice melody from KR. The violin piece for the same song is another gem. The lyrics by parthipan is another ..eps the line Unnodu kalakka ondragga inyayya un rubum thevai illai is just fantastic.
7.Oru Kottaikul - Ranjith , SUjatha
My only concern with this song is that ranjith could have been replaced with Shankar Mahadevan .This song has a very seducing kind of feel ( probably ranjith might have been chosen for this ) .the lyrics is another note worthy point in this song .the first interlude has a very haunting piece with good support from Brass/accousitics , followed by an excellent harmony of Violins and violas.the second interlude is an perfect example of KRs orchestration .The harmony between the Brass the strings, percussion is just amazing . A must listen for all .
As far as BGM is considered with 30-40 minutes of movie seen I should say that KRs BGM has given life to this movie .For example , just mute the scene where parthipan drinks the coconut water -Normally you would just consider this scene as very normal .But teh background harmony of violins and teh choir adds an new dimension to teh song .Also teh scene where he goes to teh art gallery with the heroine , the flute harmony with arabic sounds is just amazing .Also the scene where he goes behind the mouse .SO many scene slike this in just 30 -40 minutes !!!!!!
I would recommend this movie for bGM and songs for excellent orchestration and good melodies.
