Kudos to karan johar and rensil d’silva for making a bold, gripping and hardhitting movie which gives a very important message too. I will congratulate karan for going into a completely new territory and exploring a domain which is completely different from his usual feel good candyfloss romantic movies. Kurbaan doesn’t at all look like a typical karan johar movie in any way. It is dark, disturbing, bold , sexy and thrilling. It is not at all a love story so don’t go inside a theatre assuming that it will be a love story till the first half and only then the thriller part will begin. There is no place for love story in the movie. It is a gripping edge of the seat thriller from the word go.
The story starts in a delhi university where saif and kareena are temporary professors. Kareena has come back from newyork where she teaches bcoz her father is ill. She meets saif and love starts blossoming bet’n the two. One day kareena gets a call from newyork university asking her to come back for the fall semister. So saif and kareena decides to get married and they both shifts to newyork. There they meet their conservative muslim neighbours and then one day one of kareena’s neighbour comes to her And tells her that her life is in danger and that she needs help. Soon kareena realizes that something terrible is going to happen and that she is a pawn in a huge game of death and destruction.
The plot is similar to newyork but the treatment of the plot is extremely different. Newyork was bright, colourful and preachy whereas kurbaan is dark, disturbing and bold. The screenplay of the movie is gripping and thrilling. The first half literally keeps u on the edge of your seats. But the movie becomes slow in the second half and only gains momentum in the climax. The climax is violent and disturbing and the end is superb. The dialogues are beautiful and well written. The direction by rensil is good but it can be better. The cinematography is brilliant and newyork has been captured brilliantly and so the actors expressions are captured beautifully. The music is soulful and melodious and tracks like shukraan allah, ali maula and kurbaan hua are brilliant.
Saif and karena burns the whole screen by their bold and sizzling hot passionate lovemaking scenes. Their chemistry is good but considering that it is a thriller there is no place for love and romance in this movie so don’t expect much of their chemistry. The violence in the movie is very hardhitting and powerful. The performances by om puri and kiron kher are top class and superb. Vivek makes a grand comeback and gives a very good performance in the film. Dia mirza dies very soon and has little scope of acting. Saif is disappointing and his acting lacks the intensity it should have and his expressions are blank throughout the movie and he has underplayed his character too much. But the biggest plus point in the film is kareena’s heart shattering performance which is one of the best performance of her career. If u think jab we met was her best then watch kurbaan and u will disagree. She completely mesmerize you by her powerful volatile performance.
Overall the movie does raises a lot of questions regarding terrorism and muslim fundamentalism but it doesn’t preach but definitely it starts u thinking and it doesn’t take sides of anybody and it is a must watch in today’s scenario of global terrorism. GO AND WATCH KURBAAN.
