A gripping tale of identity conflicts

Kurbaan: Must watch!

I love Saifeena. And Kurbaan is a telling tale of a love gone wrong. It’s a scathing attack on Muslim fundamentalism and the epic war raging on between the Western world and the Islamic jihadis.

Kurbaan should have done a lot better at the BO than it did. The plot is fabulous and it races through at breakneck speed. Both Saif and Kareena do justice to their parts. Rensil DSilva has really made a thrilling slicker of a movie. The songs are good and the pace is taut. An edge of the seat thriller, with a refreshing take on terrorism and Islam.

Saif, as the professor of Islamic studies, tries hard to convince the rest of the world on the principles of Islam and jihad, but no ones listening anymore. The scene where Oberoi junior and Saif debate the meaning of jihad surrounded by a group of Western left wingers in a postmodern university, is remarkable and I’m reasonably shocked that the makers of the film got away with it.

The plot has a story to tell and reveals the ravages of war torn Islamic countries that must change their mindsets if they are to live peacefully with the rest of the world. The most compelling part is that of Oberoi’s who takes on the fundamentalists single-handedly and being a Muslim himself, shows them where they are going wrong.

It is a remarkable tale with superb twists and turns and the supporting cast of Kiron Kher, Om Puri, Dia Mirza and Nauheed Cyrusi do amazingly well. The supporting cast from the US also produce a truly well timed and relevant film.
