In a nutshell, this is a family entertainer consisting four generations , from one family, Virani’s and how they cope with trials and tantrums that are part of a huge joint family. It has been able to captivate the audience so much so that they feel a part of Virani family.
Three years ago, it started with Govardhan Virani(BapuJi). a powerful industrialist, living with his wife, three sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, in his family home, ironically named Shantiniketan. Mihir, the eldest grandson, (America returned)marries Tulsi, the daughter of the poor family pujari. Tulsi is made the target of much ridicule, till she decides to give her three mothers-in-law - Savita, Daksha and Gayatri - as good as she gets it from them. Savita wants Mihir to marry , Payal, who is highly educated and takes interests in business.Tulsi’s battle to teach the trio a lesson was what held the audience in spell-bound.

but she is a modern woman, She has her own values and
principles. She is a homemaker by choice. She encourages her co-sister, Aarti, to attend office. There is no one more
upright, honest or righteous than ’’Tulsi’’ on the tube. Tulsi became the daughter in law of millions of families across the country. , Mihir and Tulsi are the most -loved couple often being compared to Ram and Sita.(Though this year in Star Paraivar award she lost the ’’best bahu award’’ to Paravti of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki’’).
Nation held its breath when Mihir Virani was suspected to be
dead... Relationship between Sarita(Saas) and Tulsi(Bahu) changed to that of mother and daughter. Savita decides to get Tulsi remarried..’’Aakhir tulsi ke samne uski saari zindagi padhi hai’’. But there is twist in the story , Mihir is not really dead -he just has a bad case of amnesia. He is nursed back to health by Mandira, the doctor who loses her heart in the process.Entire nation waited with baited breath as to whether Mihir will return before his wife gets married to Anumpam Kapdia, brother of Mandira. They rejoiced along with the Virani family when Mihir is reunited with Tulsi. During this period TV serial’s ratings, which reached 25 highest in history of Television.
That is the strong point of ’’KyonKi....’’ it involves the audience..so much so as one feels to be a part of Virani family. In also raises the issue of widow remarriage, relationship of the family with the widow. Emphasis the fact that marriage is not reunion of two people but the families. It makes the people discuss ’’what is to become of Mihir’s relationship with Mandira? ’’. ’’How justified is Mandira in using all possible means (even faking pregnancy) to become Mihir’s wife’’ How justified is Payal in her efforts to become bahu of Virani khandaan if not of Mihir then Hemal.(Mihir’s cousin). It also shows that no matter how much you scheme , finally it’s truth and love that wins. Audience claps when Mandira is forced to leave the country, when Payal marries an old business tycoon Mr Mehra and moves to Delhi.
Then a year back the serial suddenly fast forwarded 20 years ahead and brought in the fourth generation of Virani khandan. Mihir , played by Amar Upadhya, was replaced
and a new Mihir(Inder Kumar) was brought in. Poeple rejected the new Mihir and there were changes till people accepted ’’Ronit Roy’’ as Mihir. People had an image of Mihir and only one who could match Tulsi(Smriti Malhotra) could be accepted as Mihir. Where else did we see cast changes happening so frequently and that to based on audience demands.
With a new generation came new issues ’’how to deal with children, how to deal with elders, Ba.’’ Aagin Tulsi proved to be the good mother. She let her daugther marry Payal son inspite of her differences with Payal for ’’kids happiness’ is most important to her. She makes Gautam(the son who was stolen by her co-sisterAarti and brother-in-law Kiran and migrated to Australia) realize the importance
of family, it’s values.
Tulsi is a woman to be reckoned with. She does not accept infidelity of her husband. Tries to hide it from his family and when family comes to know that ’’Mihir is still seeing Mandira and has a son ’’karan’’ by her, they disown the son. The audience applauds the Virani family.
Now everyone is talking will Mandira get married to Mihir? Will Karan take revenge from Virani family.
