Saw this movie ? in bits and pieces only yesterday ? they were showing it in Sahara ONE.
I usually surf through channels and watch 3-4 programs simultaneously ..unless ofcourse something very intriguing and interesting come up to my notice ? then I watch the entire movie.
Anyways , whatever little I understood on seeing the movie is as follows :
~~ I saw it from the point where Madhuri Dixit ? Ramdulari ordered for a country liquor and is relating her life to Manisha Koirala ? Vedehi. One keen observation that I made here is that Ramdulari, Vedehi , Maithili are the names of Divine incarnation Mother Sita ? who ws the consort of Lord Rama ? who is worshipped all over India and even in other parts of the world . Lord Rama is the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Mother Sita that of Goddess Lakshmi.This bit I am adding for dear foreigners who have little knowledge of the Indian ancient epics and scriptures ? but ofcourse the Indians will ?.should know it.
~~ As far as I am concerned, I had ?Sanshipt Ramayana? (Brief Ramayana) in class 5th and ?Sanshipt Mahabharata? in class 6th while I was in Kendriya Vidyalaya Hasimara. We even had questions coming from it in our examination. Therefore the fact that I know the epics should not come to the Central School students as a surprise?and for the convent educated students , BR Chopra and Ramananda Sagar made serials and covered the entire epic in more than 1000 episodes !! although Peter Brooks related the entire Mahabharat in flat 5 episodes !! I used to stay awake to watch as I had heard of it a lot ? 5 episodes ! so I wanted to catch some missing links?but there was none ! ? from hidimba to Ghatotkach ? from Ambika to Shakuni?every little nuance of the Mahabharata was taken care of by Peter Brookes ! Three cheers to him !!
Anyways coming back to the story :
~~ Ramdulari was an orphan girl ? grew up to be a sensual woman ? got in the trap of a drunkard , old , haggard Director of a small time drama / skit organization ? which is still prevalent in India by the way ? inspite of Movie halls with Dolby speakers and AC? I suppose seeing the actual skin of a sensuous woman is a more welcome thought for Indian?males?(not sure, just a presumption).
~~ So this illiterate, orphan girl who makes both ends meet by dancing and acting in front of people- both men & women - falls in love with the lead role actor ? Samir soni (I freaked out for samir when I first saw him in ?Mouthful of Sky?) ? and since she is uneducated and had no one to tell her the ways of the world , she spreads her legs out of wedlock and conceives ! ? her motherhood instinct takes an upperhand suddenly !!- a woman who earns her living by showing her curvaceous waist ..takes the risk of pregnancy !!
~~ Anyways the hero declines and she insults him in front of the audience ? when a scene form Ramayana was going on ? and she is asked to jump on fire to prove her chastity, she asks Rama to jump with her as well ! ? this the audience could not take ? the men had to scream in order to prove to their respective wives that they have come to watch the epic?although they all had gone there to watch the Incarnation of Utter sensuality ? Ram dulari !
~~ This even the wives knew and as not all women wives are gook looking , they take this opportunity to hit her and stamp on her with their feet ? saying things like ? she smokes, drinks, sleeps around - !
The question now arises ? when people knew that she is that kind, then why even let her enact the Divine Mother?s role !!- this is called Indian Hypocrisy !!
~~ Anyway in the mean time an educated woman Manisha, also falls prey to suspicion and doubt by her husband played by Jakie shroff.She was saved by a good villain- Ajay Devgan and educated hubby doubts her with a jhahil- ganwaar illiterate villain man thinking that she has had some affair with him !! actually its not a male’s fault - for a male - any woman can do - they can jump with anyone - and since people judge others by their standards - so most males think that even if wife talks to some male...she will jump on bed with him!!...just as he would have if he had met a woman - any woman alone without the wife’s presence !!
~~ In the end of the movie (I missed the middle actually)- Vedehi says that a woman has lost her shyness because of villain men who rape woman ? that villain man happens to be a politician ? indicating that Indian public votes for villain men and the common men give away their daughters and wives to the politician to enjoy ! ? Oh! Daling ? yeh, hai India.
~~ So basically it also means that the IAS, IPS officers who are so very educated and literate do not have the charishma or team building capabilities where he/she can overthrow the villain !! ? like Ravana, Kamsa, Jarasand, Dhritrashtra were Kings and were ruling , the status is still the same in India !!- Oh! Darling ? yeh, hai India !!
~~ There are ladies also in the politics who cannot speak against the state of women ? and are afraid of Shuparnakhas, Keykeies, Mantharas and Mandodaries ? as their counterparts are the rich, famous industrialists ruling the common mass.
Inspite of Manisha’s blood boiling lecture in the end, nothing happened in reality - as THEY DO NOT PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH !- anyways Lajja is a good try by Raj Kumar Santoshi !
