She should have retired 30 years ago. Those who think her voice is god’s voice perhaps havent heard the voice of Noor jehan, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosale, Kishori Amonkar, Chitra Singh, Runa Laila or Abida Parveen.
It’s a shame that we Indians go by what the media dumps down our throats! The hype around this lady is unjustified. True, she had a nightingale’s voice in the early 60s but that died out within a short span ... and rather became something that sounded like a goat with a sore-throat.
If she ruled the music industry, it’s not because of her talent .. but plainly politics. she did not allow other competent singers like Sulochana Pandit, why, her own sister Asha Bhosale ... to surface during her time. People who sing volumes in her praise are perhaps not aware that her voice requires a great deal of digital remastering in the studios to sound ’Audible’.
Please do not forget the fact that she is same woman who sang Shrandhanjali ... a remixed version of oldies and later created a furore when new singers sang remixes of her own songs ... How selfish! ... it is another fact that new singers have sung it better than her. She is the singer of the masses ... someone with a musical background will scarcely revere this nightingale.
These days when you here Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta opening their mouth and an 80 year old voice coming out ... it really turns you off! Specially when beautiful songs like Jiya Jale (Dil Se) ... and songs from Mohabbatein etc have been spoilt by this unfitting voice. Think again ... even beautiful songs like those from silsila have been ruined because she sang them.
Take the example of the song ’Tujhse naraaz’ from the film Masoom ... listen to its male version and compare it with the female version sung by Lata Mangeshkar ... decide which one is better. And then decide whether you should liken her voice to that of God’s!
