Tune in to the next episode

Leela is the story of a visiting Indian professor(Dimple Kapadia) at an American university. Kris(hna) is an American Desi wearing a baseball cap backwards who plays basketball. Sound stale and familiar? It is. Even though he’s going to college and is in his late teens, Kris is still living with his mom(Deepti Naval). Of course he hates Indian culture, and of course he falls in love with the professor who teaches him about Indian culture at the same time, and of course the professor has some issues of her own with her womanizing husband. As far as side charaters go there is the inevitable reconciliation between the FOB boy and the ABCD girl, the traditional professor who doesn’t believe in divorce (but believes in sleeping with her student) and Kris’s more modern mom.   Leela ends up sleeping with Krishna. People find out. Thunder. Lightning. Yawn. For no apparent reason, Leela decides she doesn’t love Krishna and they break up. Krishna doesn’t seem to mind too much ( huh? what? why not? did she love him in the first place? I guess that’s another secret the audience isn’t supposed to know). Then for no reason Krishna and his mother become one big happy family and the go to India.   Couldn’t they have at least tried to make this a little more rational? The only fully explained character is Krishna’s mom. All the other ones seem to be floating around doing whatever, which leaves the audience grasping for loose ends. I found no meaning at all in this film, even though they could have turned this into a great movie.    And here’s the kicker: Krishna’s mom tells him, ’’I’m so proud of you’’. For what? Surely not for sleeping with his teacher? What else did he do besides that? Well I guess that’s another mystery..Please add your comments
