Overseas Doctors Experience

I am a Psychiatrist working in Australia for the last 3 years. As a doctor working in India and Australia, I wish to share some of my experiences in the profession.

Here the system is well organised, good referral and follow up care, well documented, evidence based scientific approach. It has well equipped labs in public hospitals, most places have CT scan or MRI. The system is patient friendly with a clean and safe environment. There is team approach, well trained staff, high accountability for patient care. However, you have to face many Medico legal issues. Generally therre is Indadequate family support. The job is quite demanding and there is a feeling of being on edge most of the time during work

There are still many other points, The most important is probably "Loss of a sense of achievement in the service" during the period of work in Australia. When I was working in a govt hospital for more than 9 years in India, I alway felt the unique experience of satisfaction when I provided good service in the form of treatment that relieved the suffering. It was greatly acknowledged both by the patient and the faimily members. This was more evident in govt hospital setting where most of the patients are from a low socio-economic status. The scenario is quite different in Australia. It is just like any other job for which you are paid. Nothing more. But this well compensated by the pay. The pay scale for doctors in India is pathetic. After a dedicated effort for more than a decade during the training period, you get a paltry sum which is not sufficient to lead a decent living. I wonder why the govt never bothered to pay well for doctors in India.

I believe many doctors will not try for going abroad, if they are suitably paid. I think they are entitled for a decent pay. The govt is spending a lot of amount from the taxes paid by the people for training doctors, but failing to utilise their service.
