The Living Bridge

The living root bridge in Riwai village of Mawlynnong is a sight that’ll leave you speechless. Located about 80 kilometres from Shillong, this small settlement boasts about its beauty it’s scenery and the Living root bridge.

To get to the bridge one will have to climb down the not so fine stairs and rain infact makes it a little bit slippery so watch your step once you are going towards the bridge.

The bridge itself is a sight to ponder. The ingenuity of our forefathers can be clearly seen in the way the trees were directed to grow when they were young saplings. This was definitely a thought for the future which was done by our ancestors for our benefit. The view itself is picturesque with a stream flowing underneath it and the two trees in complete harmony creating a structure in unison enabling us to cross from one side to the other.

Do ensure you keep a few candies with you and don’t forget your shoes for climbing up although time consuming is easier compared to going down there.

Also there is a skywalk and a view point in the tree canopy nearby which offers a wonderful view of the surrounding ecology.

Also note that you avoid travelling on Sunday as most places remain closed.apart from that Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village and it’s surrounding areas are wonders of nature and for those photography lovers, it’s definitely paradise for you all.

Accommodation is pretty nice although a bit overpriced I’d say and I suggest you travel out of Shillong rather than stay in Mawlynnong and Cherapunjee is also around 2 hours from here don’t miss it.

Best time to visit is surely in Spring or summer where you’ll have the best views of the valleys and gorges.
