Train yourself before you board...

Mumbai local train like all Public sector undertaking services has a poor reputation. Slow movement, late coming, crowded compartments, dirty compartments are some of the many grouches one has about the trains.

I have been travelling by the Harbour line for many years. I have to admit that the services have improved tremendously. In my office attendance is recorded by way of a computerised Muster system. If you are late by 5 min. the system automatically marks you late. I catch the 9.04 a.m. train near my residence. This reaches me at exactly 10.00 a.m. at my office. If I reach the office by 10.05 a.m. I am marked late. Surprisingly I have never reached beyond 10.05 a.m. in the last 6 months or more. That speaks well of the Local trains. I don’t think running late is any more my complaint against the Mumbai local trains.

The trains also are moving pretty fast after the slums along the tracks have been cleared.

Railways must improve the working of the fans. Esp. in summer with the crowded trains a fan that stops working can be hell for the passengers. I have also noticed that compartments are being kept clean and there is less complaint about filth in some of the 1st class compartments.

Of course over crowding is a big problem. But should railways be blamed for it.

Overall there is improvement. But if you can help it avoid the local trains. I don’t know whether I can suggest you drive down to your work place. The Mumbai roads are another subject for discussion. I have tried it and still prefer trains. But with all the flyover coming, I believe in future driving would be more comfortable.

Inspite of all what I said I don’t rate train travel high and would recommend anyone to try these services.
