THE THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS I ENDURED WHILST READING, THE LOST BOY, ARE SIMILAR TO PELZERS BEST SELLER, A CHILD CALLED IT. THE LOST BOY DEPICTS THE SECOND PART OF HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY, AND IS TOO PAINFUL BUT GIVES YOU HOPE THAT WHEN ALL SEEMS DEAD THERE IS HOPE. YOU JUST NEED TO SHOUT FOR IT.
Dave Pelzer was abused by his mother from the age of 6. He endured many years of tremendous torture, including being starved, suffocated and badly burned. Dave couldn’t turn to his Father, Brothers, teachers and even felt god had betrayed him. Dave referred to as ‘the boy’ or ‘It’ by his mother was treated badly. Dave never saw a future and all these thoughts are depicted in ‘A Child called It.” Dave managed to escape.
The Lost Boy describes the Journey which Dave faced after his mother had been stood for. Immediately he was taken to hospital, bathed and cleaned up. The condition of Dave and his clothes shocked the Doctors. Dave felt ashamed and felt he had deserved to be punished. Of course this had been brainwashed into him by his evil mother.
Little Dave was initially taken to a foster home which was run by ‘Aunt Mary’ and well he was happy there. Dave began to settle in, feel more at ease with himself. Dave never felt any different than any of the children which stayed there. Dave was given new clothes and toys. Was visited by a social worked to which he formed a bond with. This was so that a case could be filed against Mrs Pelzer. When David realised this, he tried to deny everything which he had said. Dave began to panic.
In the end, it was decided that Dave would not become property of the state, which would mean that he would no longer have to stay with his mother. This was the verdict, which had been hoped for. Dave Pelzer was now free. He could become the boy he had always wanted to become.
Dave never really settled at any particular Foster home, which is common. He resorted to crime to try and fit in with other guys. Dave just wanted to be accepted. He had never known any other way. Dave had been accustomed to his own ways of stealing. David took part in a small fire in his school, although he had tried to put it out as he was against what his so-called friends were doing, he was given the full blame. This rendered serious consequences. Dave couldn’t trust anybody.
The Lost Boy tells the story of how Dave develops from a boy to a teenager, how difficult life was going to be. He was beginning to learn how to be independent and break all the past ties with his mother. A child called It was heartbreaking and the Lost Boy is encouraging. When I come back from holiday I’ll tell you what A man called Dave is.
This book the second part to the trilogy is £6.99 and well worth reading. However I would advise reading, A child called It first. Now all awaits is part three which I promise will follow soon!
