~~ Lucky Unlucky ~~

I don’t watch all movies for their story. These movies whose stories are unimportant are divided into two classes. One- cartoon movies. Two- I’m too ashamed to describe them but they have only one hero and one heroine and no other character involved.

~~ The Review ~~

“Lucky” was a favorite gossip topic a month or so ago. Its fame was all because of a single coincidence. Salman Khan and an actress who looks remarkably like Aishwarya Rai play the lead characters. So when my friend rolled in this disc from the neighboring library, I felt a little inclined to watching it. I have never repented more before in my entire life.

~~ The Plot ~~

Truth be told, there is no “plot” to this movie. It can all be summed up to one incredible sentence. An utter idiot finds another utter idiot in his car when terrorists attack them and as they try to escape from that danger they fall into several dangers but finally reach their parents. That’s it. Of course, there is an erratic Indian intelligence official out to their rescue. One of the utter idiots is the son of an Ambassador. The other utter idiot is a schoolgirl and the daughter of an embassy official. And everything is happening in Russia.

To be very honest, there is absolutely nothing more to the plot of this movie. The movie does not explain who those terrorists were. It’s just some arbitrary group of arbitrary guys blowing arbitrary things up. I don’t think us viewers would like to become such overworked arbiters.

~~ Cast Performance ~~

SALMAN Khan as the son-of-an-ambassador Aditya is meaningless. I couldn’t make out exactly what type of a guy that Aditya was supposed to be.

SNEHA Ullal, the Rai-look alike and the schoolgirl Lucky was unfortunately dumb. I thought she only looked like Aishwarya. But she resembles her more. Both have the same expression for every emotion. Eek!

MITHUN Chakraborty as the mad spy was mad. He is a good actor, may be. But he’s done a stupid job here.

~~ Screenplay and Music ~~

The actual story line and the music sequences have no connection whatsoever. I mean to say- the dancing shown in the songs looks contrived and artificial. It has nothing to do with the situation in which that song is shown. As far as the quality of music itself is concerned, it was jerky- good in parts but mostly bad. There is only one song that’s tolerable- “Soniye sun zara”. Apart from that, thumbs down!

The movie rushes to its conclusion. Everything is happening very fast. The story slips from one situation to the other. But the two situations don’t necessarily logically lead to the other. The “mad spy” element of the movie does not add to excitement as I had hoped. The theme of terrorist rebellion in Russia also is awfully made. We never get a clear idea of who’s warring with whom.

~~ Random Ramblings ~~

Russia happens to be the most convenient spot to make such a movie. It’s large and it’s got a history with so many minor rebellions strewn around here and there. But it’s interesting to note that the rebellion had affected the entire country according to the movie. All telephone lines were supposed to be cut off and there was curfew even in Moscow. Now with a rebellion of that proportion supposed to be happening in the country, the movie should have had some explanation as to who those rebels were.

Because of this aspect, Lucky becomes nothing more than a fantasy story. I have always said that reality bugs us all the time so it’s good to slip into fantasy once in a while. But “Lucky” was not what I meant. Even if it is a fantasy, it must have some basis in reality. Lucky has none. This is not good escapism. Poor show!

On an entirely different note, I never understood what the title meant by “no time for love”. If I were stuck even with the cutest lass in the middle of a war torn country, I don’t think I’m likely to even think of smooching her till I’ve brought our lives out of danger! And I think the same would apply to Lassie Dearest as well!

~~ The Verdict ~~

If you haven’t watched Lucky so far, then you are truly lucky. Strictly, keep away!
