I am from a family where my father, brothers and sister all graduated from M.S. University of Baroda and it was my fathers strong desire that whatever we study, we should be graduating from M.S. University and only reason for this was the reputation of the University.
This institution is one of the best thing happened to city of Baroda because of great vision of late Shree Maharaja Sayajirao. As other reviewers have pointed out this institution encompases so many different branches which is very hard to find in our country.
I graduated from faculty of Medicine so I can tell you that environment was different, we were studying harder and harder everyday and our teachers were teaching us because they loved to teach. There was no tuition system and I believe there is no tuition system even today as far as Medicine is concerned. Now in other faculties there is tuition system but if student is hardworking and proactive he can easily continue without tuition.
Now lets discuss different aspects:
Campus Life: The campus life is amazing. It is a huge campus, the main campus is obviously commerce and arts faculty which is in heart of the city and very close to railway station, bus station, restaurants and movie theatres.
Most of good fast food joints around commerce faculty are Kalyan restaurant ( It has self service and great location and very popular among students), Dairy Den (well known for icecream), Dairy Queen ( for fast food and Samosa), lots of tea stall, famous Dalwada at the front end of Kadak bazaar... list is endless.
Campus itself has a good library known as Hansa Mehta library with good collection of books and very old system of book delivery where a bucket goes down to books area with request and one of the staff searches for the book and return it back in the bucket ( I think this might have changed now). Very nice garden in front of the faculty, good auditorium and huge ground in front of auditorium near Sanskrit Mahavidyala where students used to play cricket.
Further down in the university campus there is faculty of Home Science, Girls Hostel and Pavilion which has huge table tennis area, tennis court and swimming pool ( I guess swimming pool remained closed most of the time) and also many of the hostels. At night time area around faculty of Home Science which is again right across Sayaji park (the largest public park in Baroda) is a place to visit. It is full of people most of young collegians and lots of lover birds.
Campus itself is very big and extends right from near railway station to all the way beyond bus station. There are many chai laris and bhajiya laris around hostels. Most of the time campus remains very peaceful with amazing safety for girls as I mentioned in my earlier review of Baroda that this is the city which is probably the safest for females.
During election time campus is busy with lots of activities and some time fights do erupt between different groups but nothing of great severity. Particularly commerce faculty election is very important and local political party do support candidates which I believe should be discouraged but well some of local leaders were ex university leaders so it is kind of production house for local political leaders.
There is faculty of technology which is pretty away from main commerce faculty contrary to commerce faculty campus here atmosphere is more studies related activities as most of the students are science students studying to become engineers and they seem to be more interested in making careers.
Between commerce and tech faculty there is faculty of Medicine which has the largest public hospital of Baroda and churning out almost 150 doctors every year, some of them achieved great heights in their academic fields through out the world.
Almost all campuses have small park and one or two temples. I forgot to mention faculty of Performing Arts and Music which is right across Sursagar Lake and offers degree in various kinds of dances, vocals, Tabla studies and Violin....amazing ...isnt it ? Once in every year University organizes fun fair which is really fun and also a youth festival which has interfaculty sports and cultural competition and lots of other events.
Quality of education: I think the quality of education is great considering what we paid for it. Now a days I heard government actually charging bit higher fee for education. Atmosphere is more studious in faculty of Medicine and Technology but it is different in Commerce and Arts faculty.
As one of the student earlier expressed the frustration in his review and I agree with him partly, but by enlarge only student community and few corrupt local political leaders who time to time support strikes for silly reasons are to be blamed for these problems. There are minorities of sincere students who really want to study and majority just wants degree.
Students who are just interested in degrees have actually played greater role in bringing down the quality of education particularly in Commerce faculty. I know few of my friends who in spite of adverse circumstances attended classes and are successful in their career.
Traditionally Commerce and Arts are less favored branches in India, cream students usually go to Medicine and Engineering. I think this may be a part of the problem as well. Now outlook has changed even for Commerce graduates with more opportunities so I think overall situation may improve in terms of quality of education in Commerce and Arts faculties.
Reputation of Institution: I personally believe that University is well reputed and well known not only in India but outside India as well and this statement comes from personal experience. Lots of other good institutions established after M.S. University was established but it is still one of the best in Gujarat.
Student population: Student population is mainly from Gujarat but there are many students from outside the state. As such Gujarat has become permanent settlement place for lots of non Gujaratis so essentially student population is mixed and cosmopolitan. University also receives lots of researcher from different countries of world through exchange programs.
Future after education: Certainly it depends on ones ability to utilize education in reality but overall I think students of M.S. University do better compared to other Universities of Gujarat. Medicine and Engineering students are exceptional in terms of achieving success. There are so many unknown success stories.
Scope of Improvement: a lot...and I mean it. In spite of being one of the very good universities it has it own negatives and which can be corrected. More streamlined and quick approach to resolve student problems is greatly needed.
It is kind of tough to obtain old records very easily from University Office which can be addressed quickly. Interference from politics should be avoided. University should break away from traditional education model and try something new to meet current demands of advancing world. Engineering syllabus needs overhaul. This university has probably the greatest alumni but university officials need to be more proactive in approaching them.
There are so many out there to help the university but just stop because of crazy tangle of beaurocracy. Last but not the least it needs better website management, as most of the website is always under construction.
For those who are interested direct web address of University is https://msub.edu/i1.html
