Just adding a note to people who have got an appointment at aminjikarai passport office. I had applied for a renewel with address change in the month March, 2016
For location, this building is located exactly behind Ampa mall. Very easy to locate. No parking for cars inside! Better come by a cab or auto or if you have driver then no problem to safeguard your car. Mind you, it takes a clean 3 - 4 hr inside.
Reach according to the time specified in the printout. Please remember, the time mentioned is for entering the processing center and not for appearing before the passport officer! I have seen many worrying. This way is to tackle the crowd entering.
Your time slot will be called, eg, the security at the door says "all 11:30 slot people can enter". Even if you are late by 30 or so min, no need to rush or get tensed, just show the printout and enter the hall. Once you enter, you have to enter a line called " Enquiries ". It takes atleast an hour in this line. Your documents are checked and verified and your documents are collected and placed in a brown paper file. You will be advised to go the next hall and your file comes through a security calling your name. This file has a token attached.
On the display board, your token number appers and directs to A section, this section consists of TCS employs. They check your documents again and take your photo. Insist on good photo or else you might end up with a bad photo for next 10 years. Men employees will gladly listen to you but women employees are careless and arrogant! You will be asked to pay Rs.40, this is for sending SMS till you get the passport at home! You will receive a lot of SMS like a cricket commentary! This process takes approximately 1 in section A. Once done you will be directed to B section, another small hall.
In section B, govt officials recheck the documents again, an unnecessary process! This takes around 45min to 1hr. If you enter during lunch time, then waiting time extends! After B, you are directed to hall C which is even smaller! Once your number appears, you are directed to main passport officers, who checks the same documents again and just utters " you will get your passport in a week time". Before exiting, you have to fill a form and hand it to the security and you will get a receipt in return. Section C, same duration as B.
Coming to documents. Dont carry unnecessary documents, waste of time. They accept just one document which has both ID and address together clearly. For my pp, aadhaar card was ONLY accepted. FYI, from now on Ration Card will not be accepted, see the notification on the govt passport website. Photocopy is provided inside at a reasonable rate of?1 per copy. There is a food stall with small snacks, you will definitely not go for it except your kids! No food allowed inside! Have a heavy breakfast and hold on till exit!
Office ambience was average and stuffy with aircons struggling to keep the cool. Seating is a big problem especially for elders. It is like a 30 seater bus loaded with 70 people!
Another important info, whether you apply for new pp or renewal, there will be a police check at your residence. Even if you just renewal and get pp without police verification, still someone will turn up to check and only then your pp becomes valid! Verification was done on 3rd after the process, submitting by police to pp office took 10 days.
My mom received her pp, which was a renewal, in 4 days. Mine took 20 days as my old pp was renewed in a foreign country while working overseas 10 yrs back. Since I had to apply for address change then police verification was a must for me.
Kindly have patience at the pp office at all times. Each day the pp office have a target to clear 800pps, so no use arguing with them. Hope this info helps you. Good luck.
