Mahindra Bolero - Stiff Competition for Safari and

M&M has priced the Bolero at Rs498, 000 (US$10, 915), ex-showroom, as against the Sumo DX’s Rs550, 000, the Qualis’s Rs650, 000 and the Rs800, 000-plus tag attached to the Safari.

The Bolero is a major improvement on the Mahindra Armada platform and the changes are more than skin-deep. There is a jump in overall quality and benefits like the IFS, spruced-up interiors, improved gearbox and better handling make it attractive to a private buyer. It also has rugged good looks and is a practical proposition on poor roads, boasting a ground clearance of 200mm.

Power comes from the Peugeot XD 3P 2.5-liter diesel, which is a little light on power but offers reasonably strong pulling power. Testers say refinement is needed to eradicate engine boom at low revs. Handling is greatly improved thanks to an independent front suspension although body roll is noticeable.

The Bolero is the first locally made vehicle in India to offer a global positioning system (with maps of Delhi and Mumbai), a rear entertainment system, including a console-mounted unit with a DVD player, at a price of Rs700, 000.
