Prem? The name rings a bell in my mind. Salman Khan! But unfortunately, Salman, the favourite hero of Sooraj Barjatya is not to be found in this flick. But we have a Mr.Hrithik Roshan who has left nothing undone to copy Salman. I am not a fan of Salman, but everybody have their own style and nobody can copy it. Seems like, Hrithik has not yet realised that . I know it is too late to be writing a review on this movie. Believe me, it took me these many months to come out of the shock that Hrithik and Barjatya ( with lots of help from Kareena) gave me. I was expecting a much more mature movie from the director of HAHK, HSSH and MPK. Unfortunately, MPKDH is a total disaster.
Storyline-
Prem Kishen(Hrithik), an employee of Prem industries( I have made this name up coz I dont remember it) visits the small town where the lead lady, Sanjana (Kareena) puts up. Sanjana’s family mistake him for the owner of the Prem industries. And Sanjana is literally pushed into Prem’s arms by her mother. Finally, after a lot beating around the bush, they fall in love. Kahani me twist! Enter the real Prem (Abhishek), Prem kumar. He falls in love with Sanjana too ( how can anyone manage to do that!)..... when Sanjana’s mother realises that the real Prem is Abhi, she forces her daughter to have Prem kumar, instead. But in the end, the lovers unite. ( can we have a break?)
Screenplay-
Fine. This flick has a story. May be a little lousy. But at least having a story is better than having none at all. (HAHK, being a good example of a film with no story). Well, Soorajji was very good at writing a screenplay with no story but alas! Not anymore. Lots of songs and dances are a part and parcel of his movies, and so is this one. But what is it with all these talking parrots, toon dogs, etc? There was actually no need for all these comic ( if they can be called so) characters, because one, Mr.Hrithik Roshan is sufficient. I will come back to him later. The first half of the movie is simply torturous. With Hrithik jumping and bouncing crazily throughout and with Kareena giving him a tough competition. And yes, what is this with the smooch scene? And on top of that, an irrelevant one. Some X and Y smooch in their car. So what? It’s none of our business. But Mr. Barjatya finds it necessary to include a minutes’ long smooch scene. Well, Mr.Barjatya, this is not what is called sensual, this is called being cheap.
If all these were not enough to dig at the viewer’s brains, there is a Valentine Day Competition too, with a lot of nonsense and overflowing sensuality from Hrithik and Kareena. ( especially the Ajnabee song, man! how cheap can anyone get!!!!)
Somehow, I managed to remain in my senses when the (welcome) interval arrived. Now, enter the dynamic and serious Abhishek as Prem Kumar, with his mom Reema Lagoo. Ha, that sounds like a Barjatya movie. Well it looked like one too when Abhi was around. Hrithik settles down towards the end and is quite watchable. But the climax is so horrible and tedious that I began wondering if I was ever a fan of Mr.Barjatya! All is well that ends well. The lovers unite. But Mr.Barjatya doesn’t let us off so easily. He includes a final scene where Abhishek and Kareena are competing for the Friendship Day Competition. How silly! Or should I say, how stupid?
Direction-
Very bad direction. I could not believe that Sooraj Barjatya actually took four years to write this screenplay. ( explains why it took me four months to overcome its effect)
Acting-
Very bad and over acting by all the lead artistes with Abhishek being the only exception. I am sure Salman would have laughed his heart out at the very bad copying of his skills by Hrithik. Kareena, brings shame to the Kapoor family and to her really talented sister ( she has been doing that ever since she entered Bollywood). I dont understand how people tolerate her. Ugh! she is pathetic. Himani Shivpuri, as Sanjana’s mother joins Kareena and Hrithik in the worst acting category. Abhishek is simply awesome as Prem Kumar- serious, dignified, dynamic. He is simply superb. He makes all the rest of the cast look like immature and stupid. If the movie made any money at all, then the credit should go to Abhishek and Abhishek alone. But it was really very sad to see how a wonderful and talented actor was wasted in a very sheepish role.
Bottom line-
I know it is too late to advice against watching the movie but I believe in, ‘better late than never’. I plead that, those of you who have not watched the movie yet, DO NOT dare to watch it! It is not worth wasting 3 hours and torturing yourselves.
