A Cultural Melange

Living in Malaysia for past one and a half years exposed me to many of the cultural vagaries of the land. The diversity of the population consisting of Ethnic Malay, Chinese and Indians mainly add much color and pomp to the malaysian festival landscape.

As expected the main Muslim Festival is Hari Raya ( Ramdam - Fasting Month ) which falls around November end - December. The chinese festival is the Chinese NewYear which falls in early february usually. The main Indian festivals are Deepavali ( Oct-Nov) and Thaippusam (Jan). This year’s thaippusam celebration at Batu Caves attracted more than 100, 000 people. Christmas is also celebrated. The best time to shop around is during the festival time because of discounts offered.

The sporting events include the Le Tour de Langkawi( The cycling event - Jan/Feb) and the Malaysian open Badminton.
