Well, today, I`m NOT writing a review on any film but I`m writing a review on my all-time favourite actress Manisha Koirala. I have had a CRUSH on her since many years. She is a very talented actress and she was ruling Bollywood during the 90s. All her films were way ahead of her times. When many actresses were dancing around trees, wearing saarees, etc., Manisha Koirala was doing films such as 1942-A Love Story, , Khamoshi-The Musical, Bombay and many other films, which gave her scope to perform, but suddenly after the 90`s went and the 2000s came, something went terribly wrong with her.
The Nepali beauty made her debut with Subhash Ghai`s, Saudagar, where there were great stars such as Dilip Kumar, with her.In a film, which was mainly about two old aged men, she made her own position in the film, and the girl, didn`t went unnoticed. After that, some ordinary films came her way, but after 1994, she hit the big league.
She looked gorgeous and gave a very good performance in 1942-A Love Story, where she played a Hindu girl, of those days, when the British were ruling India. She was excellent in Agnisakshi, where she played Nana Patekar`s wife who was tortured by her husband. She gave an extra-ordinary performance in Mani Ratnam`s Bombay, for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Critics Award. After playing Saira Bano, in Bombay, she again gave a break-through performance in Khamoshi-The Musical, as the daughter of deaf parents. For that film, she got lots of appreciaton from the viewers and also won many awards, which included Star Screen Awards` Best Actress Award and again a Filmfare Award for Best Actress Critics.Later on, in 1997, she played the role of Sheetal in Gupt, where she looked too hot and sexy.In 1998, Dil Se..., came her way alongside Shahrukh Khan, where she again proved that of what calibre, an actress she is.
She also did some typical Bollywood actress roles in films such as Maharaja or Mann, etc.but those films failed to create a magic at the box-office.There were some failures in between, but those could be avoided as she proved her worth, through the films listed above. So, during the 90s, she was riding high on success, but from this point, where the 90s came to an end, her career graph started moving downwards.
Then, some B-grade films came her way, such as Khauff, Chhuppa Rustam or Baaghi, etc.She started losing all the magic she had created on her viewers and the audiences. After a string of such flops, finally some better movies again started to come her way, like Lajja, (to an extent)Moksha and Companybut that were not enough to save her career.
In Lajja, she gave a competent performance, alongside actresses such as Madhuri Dixit, Rekha, etc.For Company, she won a Filmfare Award in the Critics category, but sadly, after Company, no big film cam her way.She did films such as Escape From Taleban or Marketwhich did not have such a great impact on the audiences and her star status.
The actress has totally wasted herself. That is what I can say, about her, as of now.She is such a TALENTED, actress that she needs to do such films, which do justice to her talent. Her first home production film Paisa Vasool, with Sushmita Sen, has also fared very badly.By now, she has no great film, in her hand. There is no big budget film, in her kitty, other than Taj Mahal-An Eternal Love Story, but that film also has her in a supporting role, which doesn`t seem to be a substantial one.It has been in the making since 2 years and hasn`t seen the light of its day, until now.Another film, which she has in her kitty is Chaahat-Ek Nasha, which is being made by the team of Market, and so there are very little expectations from that film, too.
There are many reasons for Manisha Koirala`s failure:
She has nowadays, restricted herself only to soft porn flicks such as Ek Chhotisi Love Story, Tum? A Dangerous Obsession or Market. She should realise that such roles do not suit her, anymore. She should do what actresses of her age, like Tabu, are doing. She should do films like Maqbool, or Chandni Bar.I wonder what happened to the actress who did such mature films, in the past, which were way ahead of their times.
There is also, always a controversy surrounding Manisha Koirala. She had a fight against her Ek Chhotisi Love Story director, K.Shahshilal Nair. Then, she was asked to do N.Chandra`s Indira Gandhi, but people do not want to see her in that role, because of the image, she has made of herself, amongst the people.
She is also becoming very fat, and today, for Bollywood actresses, it`s a must to remain slim n smart.
Her boyfriends have completely DESTROYED, her film career. She is all the time, changing boyfriends and right now, she is having an affair with an American Cecil Anthony.Believe me, that the guy looks so strange, that you wonder is Manisha crazy?
Right now, she has planned to shift to New York for some months to learn film direction from an institute, there. So, in the meantime while she will be studying film direction, her film career will be completely destroyed.
On the whole, Manisha Koirala is an amazing actress, who truly knows the real meaning of the word actress, but it is so unfortunate that now, she has wasted herself and her talent, completely.Let`s hope that she goes back to the same position, where she was through her forthcoming films.
