Its been quite sometime since I last wrote a review in MS. Let me kick off with a review on Manmadhan.
Director : A.J.Murugan
Story, Screenplay, Direction Supervision : Silambarasan
Producer : Indian Theatre Productions
Cinematographer : R. D. Rajasekhar
Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja
Cast : Silambarasan, Jyothika, Sindhu Tolani, Goundamani, Atul Kulkarni and Mandira Bedi & Yana Gupta (both special appearances).
The Plot:
The movie is about a serial killer who targets young girls flirting around with guys under the cover of love / friendship. He is psychopathic bloke who losses his kin due to once such gal and goes about venting out his vengeance on all girls. Silambarasan, better known as Simbhu has penned the story and screenplay himself and has also supervised the direction of this movie.
To be honest, its a great effort from him. All through these years, we (the followers of Tamil tinsel town) have known Simbhu as the son of T. Rajendar and has acted in a handful of movies as hero. He has been trying to imitate mannerisms from Rajinikanth and has had no success so far. This time around, he seems to have packed off all those stuff and concentrated on acting alone.
Let me not reveal what happens in the movie and I leave it to the audience to experience themselves. The screenplay is not extremely fast paced but it does not plunge at any point too. The same subject has been handled in an old movie but still the intensity with which each scene passes off really glues the audience to their seats.
Cast:
Silambarasan and Jyothika play the lead pair in this movie. Simbhu looks very smart in this movie, especially in the songs sequences with Yana Gupta (the song Athai, Athai) and the duets with Jyothika. He has truncated all his mannerisms in this movie and has just given a picture perfect expressive performance.
Characters like the one he plays in this movie require quite some amount of homework and seems like Simbhu has got his calculations right this time. His dialogue delivery has improved vastly in this movie and the scenes in the second half of the movie prove them. The villager character (which is also played by Simbhu) puts him right at the top with some good actors. Hope that the success of this film doesnt pass on to Simbhus head and he would sustain his performance for many years to come.
Jyothika (fondly Jo) looks gorgeous. She has played the role of a slightly innocent lover girl in this movie. Her performance in this film is really a jewel in her crown though some of her other movies would overtake. She has regained her slim trim figure that she possessed in her early years in the industry. Her dancing has also ascended a bit more than in some of her previous movies.
Sindhu Tolani, Goundamani, Atul Kulkarni are all part of the script but their roles are limited. Sindhu looks really beautiful too. She can come a big round if she picks and chooses her characters properly. Goundamani had been banking on this movie for his comeback, but unfortunately many scenes involving him have been trimmed off. The reason for this was that his part was the only thing that could be cut off to save time. Atul Kulkarni fails to impress a viewers heart.
Music:
Yuvan has improved leaps and bounds in his background score for this movie too. One of the major reasons for audience to hold on to their seats in this movie is Yuvans music. It has jelled excellently with the script. The songs were not so impressive when heard but after the seeing the movie they look good. Eh Pullai and Manmadhane nee are the two numbers stand out. The class of his father just oozes out in most scenes. It would take a long time for Yuvan to emulate his dad but believe me, he is a real class act these days.
Cinematography:
A special mention has to be made to the camera work by R. D. Rajesekhar. Songs sequences have been shot excellently especially the song Eh Pullai. That song reminds me of my college days where we as friends used to roam around in groups the village during holidays visiting.
All in all, the film has really lived up to its expectations. Some scenes where the girls are lured into the trap of the killer do instill a feeling of vulgarity. The sequences that lead to and follow them have been coined perfectly to save it from marring the idea behind. I would rate this movie as 8/10.
Final Word:
CORRECTED MACHI (this is the keyword of this movie... )
