Mary Kom, yet another masterpiece by Bhansali Production. After Ram-Leela the standard were set high, and Mary Kom did live up to my expectation in every aspect.
Movie is a biography of a boxer from Manipur Mary Kom, whose character is played by Priyanka Chopra. It is tough to say that this is her best performance till date, but undoubtedly one of her finest.
The story is based on the struggle of the sportswomen and how a small village girl from Manipur becomes 5 times world champion.
The first half shows her inclination towards boxing from childhood, that gets stronger in school time that leads her to boxing as a career. The journey from nobody to world champion is very well portrayed.
First half is good but the actual wow moments are in second half, it primarily shows her struggle after marriage. Her life changes a lot post-marriage.She gives birth to two children, thus to return back, greater hard work. and that is when you feel her struggle and her magic and with the course of movie the proud feeling of being an Indian rushes into you.
The hard work that Priyanka did for this character is clearly visible in the second half .She did justice to her role, also the characters of her husband and father in the movie were subtle yet powerful.
Screen play is just fine, could have been better especially the way movie opens.Music is OK and goes with the flow of the movie.
Also Priyanka looks far from Mary Kom inside the rings. The technique used and the punches thrown by her looks far from reality.
I went to see movie Sunday morning and it was good to see a full house for women centric Bollywood movie. As it is said, it is the best time for Indian Cinema as parallel and commercial cinema can co-exit and line between them is getting blur now.People are actually going for good stuff and the movie with good scripts are not only liked by audience but is also doing good commercially .Hopefully after Fashion, English_Vinglish, Kahani, Queen.Mary Kom also be an example of evolving Indian Cinema.
