Mary Kom a winner !!!!

This movie is the story on the life of the great Indian boxer Mary Kom, who won at the London Olympics in 2012. It basically shows the several hardships faced by her in accomplishing her dream.

Priyanka Chopra plays Mary Kom in the movie, belonging to a small town in Manipur. She is from a poor family and her father is a hardworking farmer who works hard to fulfill his family’s daily need. She is fascinated by boxing but her father is completely against her volatile nature and inclination towards boxing.

In the movie, it is shown that a bunch of school boys harass and beat Mary Kom. She decides to stand up for herself and teach them a lesson by learning boxing. With this desire to learn boxing, she meets her coach who is very strict and disciplined.  How the coach trains Mary Kom to become a great boxer forms the crux of the movie.

But her journey is no walk in the park. Mary Kom endures racist remarks from people around her who continuously try to bring her down. Belonging to a poor family, she is not able to get the required amount of nutrients and food which are needed by a boxer due to the intense training.  Despite the long list of hardships she wins the world championship. Her father is really happy for her and finally he accepts and respects his daughter decision to become a boxer. This forms the first half of the movie and is very fast paced.

The second half of the movie depicts the efforts made by Mary Kom to make a comeback. This part shows more of Mary’s person life and her family struggles. Mary Kom’s coach dispproves of her decision to start a family as it would end her boxing career. But she becomes pregnant. The struggle she faces at this point is well portrayed by the director. Eventually all of Mary’s hardwork pays rich dividends and she makes a thrilling comeback ready to conquer the world once again.

Performance wise, Priyanka Chopra is just amazing. I feel only she could have done justice to this role. She once again delivers with an award winning performance. Playing Mary Kom was not easy for her and she actually had to train n work very hard to get into the skin of the character. Sunil Thapa as the coach does justice to his role. It was due to intense training and his support got the best out of Mary Kom.

Debutant director Omung Kumar has managed to strike a chord with the audience. He his efforts manage to get a sense of patriotism among the audience.
