Those are just scenic views, what you see while travelling via Lonavala and Khandala.
But Matheran is totally a well Marketed one, which is really not worth it.
Let me start with entry.
Toy train is made to commercialize the place but a journey of 2 Hours is too much while you can get a taxi and get there in less than 30 mins.
The taxi(which is omni mostly) driver.drive really rashly. To make it tough for others who drive their own car to the place.
Parking charge was 30 Rs but tax on same were 50 rs i.e. Total 80 Rs. And what you get is just a dusty uneven place, where it is tough to find a parking.
Vehicles are not allowed to enter in Matheran, but you will find more trouble due to the horses, they dont stop like vehicles, and even do not blow horns. You need to look after yourself and your children when they pass near by you.
Un-necessary high no of points to make it more commercialize. Most of them are same view from different places.
Entry tax of Rs 50. is not worth it, because you already pay good price for each and everything up at Matheran village. And dusty roads with Horse dung to walk is not what they should charge for.
And beside all this the road from Nerul to Matheran(specially on the height where you need more control on car) is full of pot holes, making I more dangerous.
Visiting all of them and travelling back to Pune, I felt the same view is available around every side of road. This made me think again what was so special in Matheran that took me there, but couldnt remember anything as such .and I realize it was just the marketing of the place.
